They are sending me the Linksys adapter. I currently have a Linksys wired router. I am thinking about going wireless in the near future. Am I better off using the supplied adapter and just getting a standard wireless router, or is there a benefit to getting the Linksys router with the adapter built in?
Also, I have seen vaying posts, can someone say conclusively where the adapter should go in my setup? Should it go before or after my router?
Thanks for your help, I am looking forward to trying this out, and hopefully dropping my local service.
Thanks, Andy |

I think I answered my own question. I just re-read the order email they sent, and I didn't realize they are actually sending a router with the Vonage ports built in. In this case, I can just replace my existing router with this new one, and then switch to wireless whenever, correct?
Thanks, Andy |

yes it is a router. it's a linksys RT31P2. you can look it up at the linksys website. linksys also makes a wireless router with 2 phone ports which I want, but I haven't noticed any posts about it. |

Yeah, you can just go with the Linksys one they send you and take out your existing router. This will eliminate any additional problems.
Linksys also makes the wireless router (with the Vonage Voip ports built in)... you can find the product on their website. But you'd have to purchase it through a retailer---Vonage does not sell it.
If you ever decide to go wireless, buying the Linksys Voip Wireless Router would probably be the easiest solution, though certainly it can be done with any wireless router. |

It shouldn't really matter whether you go
Modem->Other_Router->Adapter
-or-
Modem->Adapter->rest of network
... *if* your "other_router" has a QoS feature and you set high priority on the port to which the phone adapter connects. The primary issue is having enough upstream bandwidth for the phone service to work properly. In the first scenario, where the phone adapter is plugged into another router, it is treated just like any other host on the LAN and shares the bandwidth equally. So if you're doing a big FTP upload (or your kid is running a popular P2P server in the next room), the phone adapter could become bandwidth starved and voice quality will suffer.
When you set QoS on that port to high priority, the phone adapter gets first dibbs on bandwidth, which of course means more reliable operation.
