Post subject: How do I set up vportal behind Linksys BEFW11S4
I first tried
Vonage
s recommend set up of...
Comcast -> Motorola SB5101 -> Vportal -> BEFW11S4 -> internal Lan
Everything worked, but my internet/web browsing went down the tubes. Watching any kind of streaming video was painful.
Now I've switched the Vportal behind the router, as such...
Comcast -> Motorola SB5101 -> BEFW11S4 -> internal Lan + Vportal
Everything works great. I've got back my 6mbps internet on the network, and the phone seems to be working fine... even a couple test faxes.
On the new setup, I've turned off DHCP on the Vportal, and assigned it a static IP of 192.168.1.250, changed the subnet to match the network, as well as the pointed the default gateway to the Linksys 192.168.1.1.
First question is: Should primary/secondary DNS servers be set to my comcast DNS server addresses?
Second question: I have 3 computers hanging off my Linksys router and can access the Vportal from 2 of them using the assigned IP of 192.168.1.250:8080, as well as the http address of v-configure.com.
On the other computer- my main system, I can't get through. I find this very frustrating and can't figure out what's going on.
I've searched for some detailed instructions on setting up the Vportal behind a modem, and can't find anything addressing these kind of questions.
Final question: is my BEFW11S4 in need of an upgrade to properly handle
Vonage
?
Thanks for any help!

Answers in order of questions asked.
#1 - you can leave them blank and it will automatically use the comcast dns servers.
#2 - you would need to give us the ip addresses of all 3 computers to see if there is a secondary subnet that is being used by the main computer. or perhaps you set up a static ip with a different subnet.
#3 - does it have QoS? If not, then yes, it needs to be upgraded so that it can control the traffic going up the pipeline to Comcast. Look at my signature and you'll see what I use.

Thank you so much for the speedy reply!
As for item #2: all three computers are assigned static IP addresses and are on the same subnet - 255.255.255.0
the IP addressess are: 192.168.1.101 ; .103; and .110
I can't figure this out and it's driving me batty <grin>

can you check their fully ipconfig info on all 3 to compare. Not just the ip address of the device itself?
Also, can you get to the network shared folders between all 3 computers?

Well, everything now seems to be working properly!
I did install a new linksys WRT54G and that must have made the difference, because I honestly did not change anything else.
I did set up QOS by inputting the MAC address, and setting priority level to "High" I checked incoming and outgoing faxing and both went through without a hitch, and voice quality appears to be as good as the old Verizon line with no apparent degradation in broadband speeds.
Thanks everyone for your input, guidance, and patience!
Regards.

Are you using the stock Linksys firmware? If so you should consider switching to DD-WRT. It gives you many more powerful features and is free software!

It's a new router, so haven't fooled with it, but I've heard about dd-wrt and am intrigued, but somewhat hesitant as I am of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" school.
I'm also a little afraid of your avatar...are you trying to lure me over to the dark side? (Just kidding.. couldn't resist!
So what goodies will WRT provide me that I need, but just don't realize yet?
