I'm not sure exactly what this means yet. If I understand it correctly, we will be able to carry a WiFi phone around & make or receive calls using our Vonage line from any available WiFi spot in the world.

So what is the definition of available? Airport WiFi costs money & requires registration. As does many neighborhood WiFi. And your neighbors WiFi certainly isn't available. But a coffee shop's is. So just how much will we be able to use this? I'm thinkin putting up a 802.11B access point with a long range aftermarket antenea might give you good coverage anywhere in your house or extended neighborhood.

AirJunky,
You are absolutely correct! I am a techie, a toy geek, first adopter, whatever the stereotype is I probably fit it. However, on this one I would probably wait. Depending on your area, you may or may not have tons of hotspots available. If not then it would be cheaper to get a cordless phone set for home. Unless you MUST HAVE this, most people would be limited to using it on their home WiFi network. Most of the available hotspots (in my area at least) are NOT free and using your neighbors WiFi (if unopen) would be considered theft of service. But, I'm probably not telling you anything you don't all ready know.

What I meant to say was, if open (or unopen) it would be theft of service.

Actually, using your neighbor's wireless service isn't theft... numerous Federal courts have ruled on this issue.

Over and over Federal courts have stated that on the 2.4GHz spectrum there is "no reasonable expectation of privacy" (and this applies also to password protected networks on 2.4).

Any rule breaking is done by the subscriber who is violating a Terms of Service agreement with an ISP. Also note, that not all ISP's prohibit broadcasting one's service to non-subscribers.

This explains why the only people who get in trouble when non-subscribers tap-into someone's internet service on 2.4GHz are the subscribers themselves (as in NYC when Time Warner went after their customers... they legally couldn't do anything to those who weren't subscribers).

This also explains why attorneys don't talk on cordless phones when having a client-priviledged conversation.

Cell phones (in most cases), however, are on regulated spectrum, so there is an expectation of privacy.
