Hi All

I am from MP, Indore, India and and working in VA. I am going back to India for vacation, so I am thinking to take the Vonage phone over there.

Here I need help from Vonage experts, yet, i didn't purchase any thing. Neither router nor the adapter. Currently I have the BSNL broadband (256 KBPS) connection.

1. I want to know what router and the adapter will be good and can easily configure, Do I really need router (?) or without that I can use my phone, If I need to buy any router/adapter which model is better?

2. Which Vonage plane is better for startring, we can upgrade later

3. Do I need to activate the phone here in the USA and test it then will take that with me to India, will it work there>

4. If I dont happy with the services can I disconnect the service without loosing any money

I am sorry to asking too many question.

Vonage only offers 2 kinds of devices. a) a phone adapter only or b) a phone adapter that also has router capabilities.

People choose option a if they already own a router and people choose b if they don't.

I believe an adapter only device can work without a router but it would make it impossible for you to use your computer and surf the internet at the same time. it also makes it a pain to have to alway switch back and forth while you are there.

I don't think there is really a preferred model.

The most obvious one is the $14.99 which gives you 500 mins/month and once you exceed about 780 minutes, then it is best to go to the unlimited @ $24.99

Please note that Vonage charges for any changes to your plan.

Well, Vonage does not ship devices to India or any other country except Canada and the UK but you have order the devices from those countries. You can purchase a device here at a retail store in the states and then activate it once you get to India saving you some time.

Yes, I believe there is a 30 day money back guarantee. But if you buy it from a retail store, I am not sure what their policies are in terms of returns and refunds.

If you choose to get the device from Vonage, you will have to return it to them which can be very costly having to ship it from India. Also make sure to have it returned via a deliver tracking service like UPS, DHL, FedEX, etc.

No Need to apologize; that's what we are here for. Hope all goes well in India.

I believe they sell them at all the retail electronics stores like Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.

Double check with these stores to make sure that they will let you get a full refund if you are not satisfied with the service.

I would recommend that you go there and look. They probably will not have a whole lot to choose from and ask the sales rep to help you choose one. I don't know what is being sold these days.

The Vonage V-Portal model number VDV21-VD and the Vonage VWR D-Link are the two phone adapter/routers that you will find at retail stores that offer Vonage products. I use the V-Portal and I'm very satisfied with the quality of the device and the features that are offered compared to the VWR D-Link device. One advantage the VWR D-Link device does offer over the V-Portal is that the VWR has wireless capabilities and the V-Portal does not. If you don't need wireless, I would recommend to you the V-Portal. I have a wireless router in front of my V-Portal so that my V-Portal acts solely as a phone adapter and not as a router. Below is a link for information from the Vonage website on the V-Portal.

Ashishk,

One relevant issue is whether or not you already have a router connected to your BSNL service in India. If you do, then a Vonage device that is adapter only, such as the PAP2 or the D-Link VTA, will work for you. Otherwise, as you've already been told, you'll need a router/adapter.

Steve

They have only provided modem. As far as router/adampter - 2 in 1, as I have been told that I need to buy "Vonage V-Portal Phone Adapter with 1 Port Router". Please confirn this and secondly is that come pre-configured or I need to configure manually.
