I have had Vonage service for almost four years now. Every month or so I would experience a drop out of service where I would get no dial tone and would just unplug the router and plug it back in to fix the problem. This has now become a daily issue. In order to make a call when I wake up and when I come home from work, I need to unplug the Vonage router and plug it back in. The wi-fi and cable modem dont seem to be a problem.

I have tried to upgrade the router firmware from 1.30.00 to 1.30.07, but was unsuccessful and received some basic error.

Any help on this would be appreciated. Below is my info...

1. Los Angeles, CA
2. Roadrunner Cable (Time Warner)
3. 400mbps / 6000mbps (approx)
4. Terayon TJ715X and Linksys WRT54GS-BP
5. RT31P2
6. modem > wi-fi > Vonage > pc
7. phone connection drops out

Test results look good. If this is your original adapter, I would suspect that it's dying on you. You could try moving your line to port 2 and see if that helps anything. If not, it's probably time for a new adapter.

If I move my line to port 2, I think I might have to make changes in the router, correct? Port 1 shows it is active and shows my phone #. Im not quite sure how to change the settings, but it cant be too difficult.

This morning I reset the router, which I probably haven't done for a few years. I'll see how it behaves today.

Also, if my router is going, does Vonage provide a new one free of charge? Whats the procedure to obtain another one? Just calling their customer service? Thanks for the help!

You can move your number to port 2 via your online account. It wouldn't hurt to call tech support and see if they have any advice. Not because they are likely to fix it, but rather so they have a record of you calling about your device not working.

Vonage doesn't like to give out free devices. They don't even like to sell them to existing customers. They always tell people to go to a store and buy a new one. Since yours is old and out of warranty, I'm sure that's the line you'll get. I know that many people have gotten new replacement devices by calling to customer service, but it's usually a fight to get one out of them for free. I would point out how long you have been a customer and that another company would gladly give you a device if you switch to them.

I would like to report that so far in a day and a half, the router has not dropped out on me. My fix was to completely reset the router to see what would happen. I'll post another update if I have any more problems or if all looks good still.

I would like to pass along to you that firmware updates are pushed automatically to your device by Vonage and require no action on your part. Glad to hear that all is working well now.

I have a older rt31p2 that is working fine, but my network topology is slightly different.... cable modem -> rt31p2 -> netgear wireless router -> pc's. Back in 2005, I initially had the two router's reversed in order, but soon put the Vonage router on top to let it manage the QOS of WAN traffic for the house. Don't really know if inverting your topology might also help too? I also have my cable modem and rt31p2 on a UPS... and the logs do show the ups kicking in once in a while for a very minor power blip.

first off, congrats shirtgirl on getting your rt31p2 working again. sometimes, it just needs a hard reboot.

2nd aboat2, just looking at the router that shirtgirl uses, it's a very robust and good router and definitely the preferred topography in her situation. the gs is a good series router; some prefer it over the g that I have.

I hope she is using dd-wrt or tomato firmware to make it a really robust router.

the oem firmware stinks in comparison.

What are the benefits of dd-wrt or tomato firmware? I notice Tomato is linux based, any chance my Ubuntu laptop will get a better signal strength? I already notice an increase in wifi range switching from XP to Ubuntu.

So far so good for me. The router hasnt kicked out yet!

basically, dd-wrt and tomato have robust and highly configurable QoS firmware among other significant improvements over the oem firmware.

Some have compared the $50 router becoming more like a $100-150 router when the 3rd party firmware is added.

In my case, my wrt54g oem firmware does not even have qos features while the dd-wrt has a very good one.
