I am currently using a PAP2 adapter and works very effectively unless I am downloading a file during a conversation. [ It becomes choppy and I have to pause the download ].
However, I was given a Motorola VT2442 router last year as gift ( go figure ?). I have never used.
Should I give it try, or leave well enough alone? |

What router are you currently using with your pap2? The Motorola is a router and phone device all in one whereas the pap2 must be used with another router? Do you have Qos options on your current router? The all in one vonage routers are supposed to give priority to the vonage calls over other data, but it needs to be placed directly behind the modem to be effective. So you will have to use your current router after the vonage one or ditch it all together. Since you have it already, it wouldn't hurt to try it. You can add the Motorola device to your account via the website and then you can switch your number to the new device via your online account. |

I am using the NetGear WGR614NA Wireless routher. As for Qos options, I have no clue. Switching is something I am considering. |

Keep in mind that the VT2442 is NOT a wireless router if you need wireless capabilities. Were you thinking of switching out the NetGear for the VT2442 or the PAP2 for the VT2442? Your comment of "Switching is something I am considering" is where you confused me as to which one you are switching for. With the Motorola VT2542, the settings would be lost if the device was rebooted or if there was a temporary loss of power. You may want to search the forum to see if this was also the case with the VT2442. |

I am considering switching the PAP2 for the VT2442. Nothing more. I need the wireless capabilities. |

if this is the case, you will encounter the exact same scenario with your vt2442. it's your router that needs to be configured to handle QoS. Otherwise, it doesn't matter. the pap2 and the vt2442 will act like a simple device since they do not control the traffic through your router. only your router does. |

Mundy is right. If you just switch the pap2 for the moto and leave your netgear router first, you will have the exact same problems. Your netgear doesn't have Qos settings so here is my recommendation. Put the new moto router first in line after your modem(after you activate it with your number). You can still have the wireless capabilities of the netgear. You will then plug an ethernet cable from one of the LAN ports of the moto to one of the LAN ports of the Netgear. Next you need to turn off the DHCP server in your netgear. Finally you need to set the IP of the Netgear out of the range of IPs that the moto assigns but in the same subnet. For instance DHCP server addresses of the moto are 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the netgear router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.
If it sounds difficult, it's not really. This way, the moto router will be prioritizing your voice calls over other data that is flowing through your network. More questions? Just ask. |
