I have an linksys router, wrt54gp2a ,
a pap2 Vonage adapter,
and a motorola surfboard modem, sb5100.

The modem is hooked to the router, adapter to the router, router to the computer.

this is how i have ALWAYS had it for years and it's never given me any problems with service. I tried a new phone first, no dice.

The router is still lets me run on the internet and my speed tests show me as 7% above average in uploading, 20% above avg in downloading speed.

I think my little adapter type device may just be old enough to have kicked or be in the process of kicking, the bucket.

Any theories or suggestions what i can try?

(whenever i "reset" all my devices, the phone works for give or take, 30 minutes. before it goes back to a horrible choppy dial tone.)

I would think you may be right, since the dial tone is generated locally on your Vonage device . . .

I would call Vonage, and ask for a "free" replacment (would be the V-Portal) or availability of a credit for buying one at a retail store . . . you will most likely have to go through the trobleshooting, etc., but as a 5 year customer, they will most likely want to keep you as a customer.

Good plan, but while you're waiting for a new device, let's troubleshoot a bit. Please post the results of the forum Voip speed test (on the forum speed dial drop down menu). Also, try plugging the PAP2 directly into your modem. You won't be able to use the internet that way, but does the phone service improve?

I concur. It is worth trying to trouble shoot a bit b/4 concluding that 5 yrs is a good long life for your PAP2.

Voip test:

Download speed 4846 Kbps (socket test)
Upload speed 890 Kbps (socket test)
Quality of service 68 %
Maximum delay 51 ms
Round trip time 72 ms
Upstream jitter 1.6 ms
Upstream packet loss 0 %
Upstream packet order 100 %
Upstream discards 0 %
Downstream jitter 3.5 ms
Downstream packet loss 0 %
Downstream packet order 100 %
Downstream discards 0 %

I don't know if this helps, but it seems to be the same as the previous speed tests i tried, results wise anyhow. It gives me the Thumbs up, and yet my dial tone is still all crazy.

and, how the heck do i contact Vonage? i sent them an email 2 days ago. response time quoted says : 12 hours. Its been 48. How do i get answered?

yeah, judging by your speed test, it's a reasonable connection which might point the finger towards your pap2 since at least your internet connection is ok.

Gravityg, did you try plugging the PAP2 directly into the modem?
