if you type in dd-wrt or tomato on a google search, you will find a ton of information.
basically the wrt54g was written by Linksys in Linux. As a result, they had to make the firmware public information so they released it. this then gave the programmers a wide open door to tweak it and significantly improve its functionality.
Basically it took a $30-40 router and made it function like a $150 - 200 router.
So yes, dd-wrt makes it a whole lot better. Has tons of features unavailable on the OEM firmware. In my version, it didn't even come with QoS capability.
Now it has full capability and much more. Worth every penny especially since it's completely free.
depending on your version of wrt54g v. 1-4 can take tomato as well. v. 5-6 can only take dd-wrt and it's the micro version.
look at the bottom of your router and see what version it is.
