I do not see an old post or a sticky on what to do when adding a router to your network. Does anyone have anything?
I am adding a WRT54GL to use as primary router and keeping my WRTP54G-VR as a phone adapter only. Other than physically wiring Modem>GL>VR>Phone I do not know what else to do. I also know I have to disable wireless and DHCP on the VR but do not know how? If I type in 192.168.15.1 wont that bring up the new GL as it is primary now? Other questions are for the other settings.
Any advice on where to find this info would be appreciated. |

You don't want or need to disable DHCP on the WRTP54G. Simply connect your PC to one of the 4 yellow ports on the back and then try to access its setup page. Once inside, disable the wireless. Then, just connect your PC back to the WRT54GL. |

If the WRT54GL is going to be his primary router, thus his DHCP server, he should indeed disable DHCP on the WRTP54G. There is no need in leaving DHCP enabled on the WRTP54G...it will only cause conflict with the WRT54GL.
DallasGuy, have you connected your WRT54GL? |

Unless one of the yellow ports is connected to the WRT54GL, there will be no conflict. The DHCP functionality doesn't pass over the blue WAN/Internet port. Disabling DHCP server on the WRTP54G is a needless step and will prevent being able to access the setup page easily, if needed. |

I have not connected the GL, yet. I want to make sure I know how to do so before even trying it. I do not want to be one of those people that screws everything up then pays someone to fix their mess....haha. |

Enabling remote config management on the WRTP54G will allow access to the setup page. The WRT54GL will assign an ip address to the WRTP54G in the range of 192.168.1.xxx. To access the WRTP54G setup page enter into your web browser: http://192.168.1.xxx:8080 |

I admit that I am a noob and have a fear that I will add the GL and mess up somehow and not be able to get online for a solution. Therefore, I am listing the steps below so I can print them to have as a reference. Please no flames.
1) Type 195.168.15.1 into my browser which pulls up the WRTP54G setup and disable wireless and DHCP. 2) Physically move cable modem connection from WRTP54G to WRT54GL. Leaving WRTP54G not connected to anything? 3) Physically move PC wired connection from WRTP54G to WRT54GL. Again, leaving WRTP54G not connected to anything. 4) Install setup Wizard CD and follow instructions for the GL. 5) Connect WRTP54G to WRT54GL. 6) This is where I am not sure what the next steps will be. |

Login to your WRTP54G at 192.168.15.1 Enter your username and password to access the setup page. Disable the wireless option, disable DHCP, and enable Remote Router Access. Remote router access should be set at 8080. Be sure to save your settings after making the changes. Once completed disconnect your WRTP54G, disconnect your cable or dsl modem and then shut down your computer. Follow the WRT54GL guide for connecting your router to your modem...it's basically the same way your modem was connected to your WRTP54G. You can disregard the CD that came with your WRT54GL, it's not needed. Power up your modem first, allow all the lights on the modem to stop blinking then connect the power to the WRT54GL. Allow all the lights on the WRT54GL to stop blinking and then turn your computer back on. Check to see if you are able to access the internet. If all is working accordingly, now connect your WRTP54G by ethernet to the WRT54GL. The ethernet cable will be connected to the internet port of the WRTP54G and to a free ethernet port on the back of your WRT54GL. After you power up your WRTP54G connect your phone cable to the appropriate phone port and try to make a phone call. |

Disregard this for now. Just make sure that you enable "Remote Router Access" on the WRTP54G before disconnecting the WRTP54G. |
