My sister had me help her in hooking up the Vonage modem with her NetZero DSL and she is Ok with making calls but the other party hears breaking sound or sometimes - nothing. Anyone else work with this? What's the solution? Thanks:

Isn't net zero a discounted internet provider? Did you do the Voip speed test? Post the findings.

Here are the Voip results
download speed 1.1 mbps
upload speed 35.7 kbps
quality of service 81%
jitter 242.4 ms
packet loss 0%

So, what can I do at this point?

But would you suggest sticking with dsl or not? I have braoadband through cable at home and I don't have any such problems. I was wondering if replacing her current dsl modem or something like that can fix it or not? Thanks

DSL is good, but the version you have isn't very fast.

So, what can I do at this point?

Two problems: your upload speed is barely higher than dial-up. At the highest bandwidth saver setting, you need 90 kbps upload and download speed. Even the lowest, 30 kbps, is probablly pushing it with that connection. Simply put, your internet connection just cannot pass the data fast enough. Second, your jitter is high, but that could just be a side-effect of the low upload speed.

Even to use the lowest bandwidth saver setting, I'd reccomend at least 128 kbps upload speed. For medium or high, at least 256 kbps.

So what to do? First you need to find out what the upload speed should be. If it should be higher, call the ISP and report the trouble. If the low speed is correct, you will either need to subscribe to a higher speed package or seek another ISP.

Trekloger gave you all the info you really need but I thought I would add my two cents. The 35kbps upload has to either be something wrong when you ran the test or a serious problem with your ISP. Try running the test a couple more times and if you are still getting that low of an upload you should definitely call the ISP. That can't be right. If you have 1Mb service you should at the very least be getting 128kbps upload. Probably more like 256kbps up.

The Netzero folks tweaked some things at their end and now the upload speed is around 100 to 108 kbps. Vonage says that they need 90 kbps, so I would assume this should be enough. I will see how it works for a couple days or weeks and then post what is happening. Thanks to everyone.

Go on to your account dashboard, select features then bandwidth saver and choose the lowest speed (30kbps). I use this setting even with over 700kbps upload. As far a voice fidelity is concerned, I really can not tell the difference between that setting and the faster settings.
