PostPosted: Wed Jun 18, 2008 2:01 pm    Post subject: QOS Settings Assistance Reply with quote Back to top

I'm having major issues when using my Vonage service while someone in my house is using any of the many P2P services (i.e. Limewire, BitTorrent, etc). When talking to someone, either they can't hear me, they can't hear me, the voices are garbled, etc. I've already purchased the latest in cordless phone technology... Panasonic - DECT 6.0 Expandable Cordless Phone System
Model: KX-TG1034S I've heard this type of system is supposed to help with interference on the phones fromother sources such as microwaves, wireless routers, etc. But, I'm still having a problems and it does appear to happen when my kids are using BitTorrent or Limewire

From what I've read, configuring the QOS settings through the router is supposed to do the trick. I've seen many different examples of what to do.

For somewhat of a newbie at all this, does anyone have the easiest way of going about this? A step by step tutorial would be most appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim

First, welcome to the forum.

You have asked a great question and one that a lot of people are now facing.

In order for us to help you, however, we need to know more about how your network is set up. Take a look at my signature and let us know.

If you intend to have the Vonage adapter be your primary router with P2P software running, I would suggest that you consider buying a more robust router.

Many here have found the Vonage routers to be unable to handle that kind of heavy traffic.

Some routers, especially on the low end and early versions do not have qos so we need to know which router is the gateway for your network.

Hi,

I'm using the Linksys WRT310N Gigabit-N router. I have the Vonage - V-Portal Gateway and Router Model: VDV21-VD connected for my Vonage service with one computer connected to the router portion of this router. I have 4 wireless computers along with 3 wired computers running.

I am a customer of Vonage since October, 2002.

so your Linksys WRT310N Gigabit-N router is your primary interface with your isp modem correct?

then my next question is have you set up qos in your wrt310N?

If your Linksys WRT310N Gigabit-N router is your primary router, setting up qos on your vportal gateway will not help your call quality.

you need to setup qos in your Linksys WRT310N Gigabit-N router.

look in the users guide and see if there is a section on qos and give your vportal the highest priority.

i'll see if I can find the user's guide to it as well.

I'm at work right now but I will check the CD when I get home. I'm hoping that it is.

Part of my other problem is that I forgot my password to get on the Linksys router admin site. I tried resetting the router from the hole in the back but it didn't seem to work. I have to try it again.

Talk to you soon.

normally it requires you to hold the pin in there for about 30 sec to 1 min.

Hi,

Okay, I'll try it for about a min. Can't do it until tomorrow as I'm involved in other projects right now. Never enough time to get everything done!

Anyways, I did check the CD and the User Guide is on there. Did you want a copy?

Thanks for your help!

if you can find the section on qos, if the router has this capability, then go ahead and configure it. no need to send it to me if you can follow it.

Okay... I have the QOS section and I'm going to attempt it now. I understand about the MAC address portion, the ethernet port portion and the voice device portion.

When it comes to setting up for specific applications, I'm lost. What do I need to enter as far as port range for applications such as Limewire, BitTorrent, P2P services in general? These are the biggest downfalls to my bandwidth issues.

Thanks,

Jim
