We are having serious problems with Vonage for months.

The main symptoms is that when we receive or make calls, often the user cannot hear us at all, or voice is so broken up the other end cannot hear us. Usually, we can hear incoming fine.

We have upgraded DSL to pro business class. No change. When we run tests, it shows OK. sometimes, we are using "gotomeeting" when this happens, sometimes nothing is happening on the network except the phone call.

1. Vallejo CA. (94591)
2. ATT DSL business class pro.
3. 4MB down, 684 up.
4. Vonage Dlink VWR, AND a Vonage VDV21-VD.
(problems have been happening for the year we had only the DLink router.)
5. DSL modem is a Siemans Speedstream 4100
6.. Network configuration:
DSL ->Speedstream -> DLINK. hen DLink to VDV21.
The DLink phones go to a Vtech wireless and a UNiden Wireless. The VDV21 goes to a business phone system.
Problem happens on all lines, even the "hard wired" line.
7. Choppy audio, complaints frequently that they cannot hear us, etc.
8. Voip Test is fine:

Sounds like your internet connection is OK, you have plenty of bandwidth and jitter, etc not too bad.

My hunch is that your router either does not have QoS or it is not configured properly. I am not familiar with your router. QoS is settings that can prioritize voice packets over data packets so that gotomeeting, email, internet surfing all get lower priority than the voice. I would give that a try since it doesn't look like an ISP issue.

I use a cheap Buffalo Airstation Wireless G router that I flashed with open-source DD-WRT software so that I can manage the QoS. My old DLink router is worthless for voice in my opinion. This setup works very well for me with Verizon's awesome FiOS service and I don't have voice problems.

Hope this helps.

It is always a best practice to run the Voip test while you are in "normal" mode of operation. I would suggest that you run the test while your "gotomeeting" is in progress. This will give us a more true reading of your issues. Likewise, testing it during the heavy times, i.e. when you notice your phone having issues. I can't imagine it being all the time. I would test it during the time frames that you typically have greater issues. So if you notice that during 5-7 pm your phone service is particularly worse, that's a good indication that the network is congested with everyone returning home and surfing the net at the same time.

I would concur with peterdeal that your dlink is not configured for qos and this is contributing to your issues. you won't know this until you run more Voip speed tests while running your network at full steam.

I like the normal state testing idea. I would also email a huge file to yourself, big powerpoint file, from several computers simultaneously while running gotomeeting and see how the test comes out. The key is that it has to be a very huge file so that it consumes all the upload bandwidth that you have for a few minutes. This will ruin the voice quality unless QoS is configured correctly. "Huge" would be something in relation to your upload speed of 684K, say 20MB.

Not sure what email attachment our ISP allows. Would using a large FTP transfer do it also? I am guessing yes it would.

what you need to do is upload large files, not download them. It is the upload bandwidth that is limited, not your download. that is why I suggested running gotomeeting while you run the Voip test.
