Location: Sacramento, CA

ISP name: Wave Broadband Cable

Modem make and model: Linksys Broadband Router with 2 phone ports, model # RTP300

Setup: Modem-->Vonage-->PC

Issue: Ever since the last Windows Automatic Updates 3 days ago, I have been receiving the popup bubble in the lower right corner stating "A Local Network Connection is Unplugged" constantly.

I have disconnected the Vonage router and tried just my cable modem, and no problem. When I reconnect my Vonage router, it starts all over again.

I have been a Vonage customer for over 2 years, and this is the first time I've had a problem like this and need some assistance. I have tried disconnecting everything, rebooting, automatic repair, reverting computer back to a week ago before this started. Nothing is working.

Your test results are terrible. What happens if you disconnect the RTP300, plug the computer directly into the modem, and rerun the test?

I unplugged the Vonage router and did the test using my modem. I did not reboot or anything, just switched over. Here are my results:

Quite a difference. Something is definitely going on with that RTP300. I don't know why it coincided with the Windows update. You might want to check your network settings and verify that the WAN side setup for the RTP300 looks like the setup on your computer. (The WAN side of your RTP300 needs to do the same job connecting to your ISP that the computer does when the RTP300 is out of the picture.)

If you are running a firewall, turn it off for a few minutes to run the tests. Likewise any virus scanner. Put the RTP300 back into the setup. Reboot, and re-run the test. If the results go back to being bad, then do a full reset on the RTP300 using the reset button. Hold it down for at least 30 seconds.

I concur with Steve. If you can accurately time the problem with the update on windows, then it must have reset some lan setting on your computer. i'd check there first.

I'm not a "computer person" and don't know how to do that. If anyone would be so kind to enlighten me as to how to do that, I would be most grateful.

I've since had to just disconnect my Vonage router and just use my ISP modem, and my computer/connection is fine. Magicjack is my phone backup and is working fine but would rather have my Vonage service up and running.

Does Vonage replace modems? Perhaps my modem is shot.

I'm not much with networking details either, but with Windows XP, open control panel (start->settings->control panel). Double click network connections, then double click on the network card that you're using (any others will probably say disabled). Then look at the support tab. What does it say when the computer is connecting through the RTP300, and what does it say when it's connected directly to the modem? Mine, for example, says that the address is set by DHCP and gives an IP address, a subnet mask, and a default gateway.
