The speed tests are identical with both ISP's.. Here is the statistics for where it does not work.

***********************************
Speed test statistics
---------------------
Download speed: 215720 bps
Upload speed: 225128 bps
Quality of service: 65 %
Download test type: socket
Upload test type: socket
Maximum download pause: 582 ms
Average download pause: 69 ms
Minimum round trip time to server: 271 ms
Average round trip time to server: 278 ms

Voip test statistics
--------------------
Jitter: you --> server: 3.0 ms
Jitter: server --> you: 8.0 ms
Packet loss: you --> server: 0.6 %
Packet loss: server --> you: 5.7 %
Packet discards: 0.0 %
Packets out of order: 0.0 %
Number of supported Voip lines: 3
Estimated MOS score: 3.5

**********************************************

The one where it does not work is on a Hathway Broadband connection at Thane, India. The setup is Surfboard --> VT 2442 --> Computer.

The problem is that the internet itself works fine w/o the Vonage adatper. With the adapter inline, nothing works - no Voip, no Internet.

I have tried everything, restart, reboot, restore to factory settings. The setup works fine at a different location, just not this one!

I am inclined to think it is something to do with the Surfboard modem not assigning an IP to the VT2442.

Any ideas would be great.

Total failure, including internet, certainly suggests, as you say, that the 2442 is not getting an address. Take a look a the network setup on the computer that works when plugged directly into the modem. The WAN side setup on the 2442 needs to look like that. Also check with the ISP and see if that modem remembers the MAC address of the device it "likes" to work with. You may need to clear its memory or use MAC cloning in the 2442. If this doesn't help, give us the details listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum.

For what it's worth, your test results are pretty bad- very high packet losses and high pause and turn-around times.

Thanks for your answer Steve -
I've had 3 different computers work on the same modem one after the other.
Anything with the 2442 you would think?

It's hard to imagine what it would be, given that it works with another service.

It would seem that you've eliminated MAC cloning as an issue, since things work with three different computers. When you plug a computer into the LAN side of the 2442, can you get to its admin page?

Please give us the technical details listed in the sticky.

@steve - Yes I am able to get to the router login page - thats how I know that it is not getting an IP address (from the status page)

@mundy5 - 2 isp's are in 2 different homes - one mine and the other my brothers - sorry for the confusion.

how would I know if my ISP is blocking Vonage? and if it were should I still expect the Vonage adapter to get an IP address and then be unable to connect to the Vonage network?

Thanks.

Here are the details again:

1. Your location - Bombay, India
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc) - Hathway cable internet
3. Upload and download speeds - 256kbps and 256 kbps
4. Modem make and model - Motorola Surfboard
5. Type of Vonage adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2 Motorola VT 2442
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC - ---ditto---
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc - Vonage adapter does not get an IP address

8. Run this Voip Test: After the test has fully completed, in the Advanced Tab, click on "View Text" in the lower right hand corner. Copy-N-Paste that data into your post. - This has been posted in the first message.

are you sure that both your isp and your brother's isp use the same protocol?

is suspect that the two modems function differently and use different protocols. that's all i can see as the difference.

your brother's must use the more standard approach where the modem does everything in terms of logging into the server and then allows all the other devices to obtain ip addresses automatically while yours is not doing that or something like that.

your isp is not blocking Voip b/c it would still allow you to obtain an ip address

Since you can get to the admin page of the 2442, take a look at the WAN side settings. Do the same for the network settings on any of the computers that work when plugged directly into the modem. Are they basically the same?

@mundy5 - I am not sure what protocol is used by each setup. Both are setup to obtain addresses via DHCP. Neither is a PPPoE setup.

I am a bit confused about the Voip blocking piece you answered! Did you mean that if the ISP has blocked Voip - I should still be able to get the IP address? meaning that the Vonage adapter should be able to connect to the internet regardless of whether the Voip is blocked or not.

@steve - what other settings should i be configuring - I basically have both the 2442 and the computer to obtain IP by DHCP! I have also played with the NAT and firewall settings on the 2442 to no avail. Anything else I can configure on the router?

You have understood what I mean. The reason why I say this is because your Vonage device does not get an ip address from the internet. It gets it from either your modem or your router depending on which device is giving out the local area network ip addresses.

However, if your isp is blocking Voip altogether, then you might not get the phone line 1 light to come on but your Vonage adapter can still function properly as a router etc. The only function they can disable is the telephone function. So if you connect computers to the router parts of the Vonage adapter, it should allow your computers to get to the internet. If your computers cannot get to the internet, it's not a Vonage device problem.
