Hello:

I am business in SE Kansas with a business account on Cox Cable with a Static IP.

Note: Even though I checked "Disable HTML" The preview of the diagram above still gets mangled in the preview.

The hookup is as follows:

Cox---Motorola Cable Modem---BEFSR41---Motorola Vonnage box

The Server connects to the BEFSR41 NOT to the Vonage box

I run several services on the Microsoft Small Business server including Exchange email, Imap4, Pop3, Http, Https, Terminal Services, VPN.

My voice quality is fine most of the time but when I have a remote user connect to VPN and download files the outgoing voice quality get very choppy. Incoming voice quality is fine since I have 6-10 mbits of DL speed. (Upload is usually around 512Kbps)

I have found several posts and articles about how to set up QOS for the Vonage upload but they are incomplete or don't fit my Router which is the latest Model with the latest firmware (2.00.02).

The Linksys user guide is woefully inadequate on QOS in not explaining in explicit terms just exactly how each setting works.

I have tried Device priority with no effect, Port priority had no effect and using ANY manual upstream bandwith value cause other internet users to lose connectivity. The Upstream bandwidth setting MUST remain at Auto it seems.

Below is the Speed test results that ran on the Server. Note: the server DOES NOT run through the Vonage box.

Does anyone have specific enough settings for the BEFSR41 to enable me to run VPN downloads from the a client on the internet without cutting off the Voip outgoing voice stream?

I would suggest you buy a better router. The BEFSR41 is a very old router. I used one 5+ years ago and while it is a solid router, it does not have the things you need for really solid QoS.

Personally I would look for a WRT54GL and run the Tomato firmware on it. This gives you very good QoS settings that should address your problem.

You could also look at DD-WRT. There are many routers that support it, but I like Tomato because I find it much easier to setup.

If this is for your business, the money you will spend for a better router with 3rd party firmware will be well worth the money.

Thanks. I already have a WRT54GS v.4 which I see is the same as a WRT54GL. I DL'd Tomato and it looks real good. I'm using it now in fact. I have to wait until I buy another one to setup for the server. (Can't use this one, my wife would kill me.)
