Generally you can not use devices purchased on eBay because they were previously assigned to a different account.
You can try to register the device on the website, but odds are it won't work. |

Forgive me for asking the obvious but if it is a Vonage device couldn't Vonage people simply reassign the device to the new account? It would seem to save Vonage some money by not having to provide a new one to the customer. |

Yes I agree obvious, and yes Vonage could, but they don't. I'd love to tell you why, but I have no idea why. I just know that they don't because people post questions on this Forum every month asking how they can get around this.
Buying used Vonage routers on eBay is generally a scam since the sellers know they can't be reused. The purchase is only helpful if you are planning to use the router features and not the phone features. |

Way too much misinformation in this thread.
If you buy from a honest seller....A seller that really ownes the device and really had the Vonage account that the device was assigned to....And does not owe money on the account....
Vonage WILL and DOES reasign the device.
I know this for FACT as I just did this a few weeks ago.
I bought a " used " V- Portal from ebay.
Was UNABLE to register the device.
Followed these instructions....and the transfer went very fast and smooth !
Keep in mind....the seller has to do " ALL " the calling to Vonage.
NOTE....the seller....also MUST be the person that had/has the Vonage account that the device was last used on !

Once the seller contacted Vonage and Vonage unblocked the device....Vonage NEVER contacted me....The seller just emailed me and told me Vonage unblocked the device....
At this point I just log-in to my own Vonage account and moved my number to the new device....just like you would do if you bought the device new from a retail store.
The transfer took only a few minutes not hours or days

Thanks much for info.
What if my Ebay seller ignores my emails (and they have) -- can I have a friend call Vonage for me just "saying" they sold me the router and give them the MAC etc?
Crazy nonsense -- if Vonage is going to put their name on a product, and I'm paying for their service then why are there so many obstacles?
If this doesn't work out I suppose I need to buy something else? Does Vonage STILL not supply free equipment to users? |

WHY IN THE WORLD would Vonage ALLOW used routers with their name plastered on them to even be sold on Ebay?
Knowing they are NOT functional without these conditions?
THIS IS SOMETHING THAT VONAGE SHOULD CONTROL and legally they could get these OFF THE MARKET if they gave a sh.
"DEAR VONAGE" --
Call Ebay and do something about it. |

A friend isn't going to be able to call for you....because they aren't going to have the account information of the account the device was registered to.
Yes, Vonage does provide free/low cost for your " first " sign up device....this is one reason they block the device....you get a free/low cost device then cancel the service without returning the device or paying " full " price for the device.
I also agree Vonage and Ebay need to have some sort of agreement.
But....if someone is interested in a used/new device....that is not going to be purchased from an authorized Vonage dealer....they need to get the MAC ID before purchase....and check with Vonage to see if it is blocked.

Contact Ebay and get your money back. Have you even tried to get this to work? |

And this whole saga is why people should not buy Vonage devices on eBay unless they are prepared to take the chance of it not working.
Marc - This is why I made a simple post that it generally doesn't work, not that it doesn't ever work, that it generally doesn't work.
I totally agree that in some cases you can get this to work, but most people selling these on eBay are not going to go through the trouble of clearing the device for you. Yours is one of the few positive stories I have heard of being able to re-register a device bought on eBay. I'm glad it worked for you, but from my experience this is the exception. |
