Post subject: Audio received ok, sent poorly
Hello,
We have been having consistent problems with our
Vonage
phone. The occasional call will go well, but in almost all cases (at different times of day, to different destination numbers, etc.) we can hear the other person perfectly, but our audio is so choppy and cut-off to the person on the other end that they can't make out what we're saying. I'd think choppy audio would be a simple connection problem, but the speed test is fine and the problems are only one-way (we can always hear them perfectly).
Following the advice of the sticky, the following is our situation:
1. Your location
Nicaragua
2. Your ISP name and type (cable, DSL, wireless etc)
Cable from the primary provider here
3. Upload and download speeds
See speed test results below
4. Modem make and model
Scientific Atlantis (a Cisco company) 2100
5. Type of
Vonage
adapter used ie RT31P2 or PAP2
Model # IP 8100-2
6. Setup of Network ie Modem---->Vonage Adapter-->PC
As far as I can tell, Modem --> Switch -->
Vonage
Adapter, Switch --> PC
7. Issue you are experiencing ie dropped calls, choppy audio etc
Described above
8. Run this
Voip
Test: After the test has fully completed, in the Advanced Tab, click on "View Text" in the lower right hand corner. Copy-N-Paste that data into your post.

Your test results actually look quite good. What kind of results do you get at
www.testyourvoip.com,
test call to Boston?

For some reason, Boston (and Montreal) didn't work (error about blocked ports) for a while. I ran the test repeatedly for different destinations, though, with the following results:
Total Test Runs 15
Median MOS to All Test Points 3.3
Median MOS from All Test Points 3.2
Target Codec MOS To MOS From
Boston G.711 3.8 3.1
Helsinki G.711 2.9 2.9
Helsinki G.711 3.0 2.9
Sydney G.711 3.1 3.1
Sydney G.711 1.9 2.5
Sydney G.711 3.4 2.9
Sydney G.711 3.2 3.1
San Jose G.711 3.1 3.5
San Jose G.711 3.3 3.4
San Jose G.711 3.4 3.3
San Jose G.711 3.2 3.4
London G.711 3.0 3.7
London G.711 3.5 3.9
London G.711 3.7 3.3
London G.711 3.8 3.5
Just to compare, I ran the speed test again and got Quality of Service results of 71%, 53%, 70%, 58%, 45%. All other sections were good (green).
It looks like I'm not getting a good connection now, so I'll try again later and post more results. I'm still curious, though, what could cause incoming audio to be perfect and outgoing audio to be horrible. All the connection problems I can think of would affect transmission both ways, I'd think.

Maybe steve overlooked the jitter at 25ms. That is not good at all and would cause the problems you are describing. For comparison, run the test again with all your routers and switches out of the line. Hook your computer directly to the modem and see if the jitter improves.

25 ms isn't stellar, but it's not horrible. You may be right, but I wouldn't expect that much trouble. "Quite good" was overstating though...
This does look like an intermittent ISP issue. Jritzi, when you post more results, give us the details as you did in your first post.

Hmm. Packet losses to server up. Jitter down a bit. Round trip time about the same. Now try what Tglea said- direct connection to modem.

Your last set of tests are horrible. How old is your modem? It is either your modem going bad or you have some line problems, most likely between the pole and your modem. Bad cable line or splitter or fitting somewhere in your house. Your test results explain why sometimes your calls go ok and others don't. Your results that you posted here have ranged from decent to horrible. That would explain the varying quality of your calls. This is a problem with your ISP and not
Vonage
. Again it is your modem or a fault in the line somewhere.
From a command prompt, type ping -t
www.yahoo.com
Press control C to stop it. Let it run for a few minutes and see what the results are. Any packet loss is not good and is a reason you can give to your ISP to fix something. Also, if the RTT is over 100ms, that is not very good even from where you are at.

More fun results. Looks like we'll have to try calling the ISP and see if they can do anything.
