I have help for people who are having trouble accessing their Vonage device admin page at via the yellow LAN jack especially if you install Vonage /after/ your router (e.g. Linksys WRT54G). This technique will also work if your Vonage box is directly /after/ your cable modem and before your router, adjust accordingly.

Follow these steps.

Install your Vonage device (esp Motorola VT2142) directly behind your router. Vonage calls the blue RJ45 jack the WAN side -- this blue jack needs to be connected to an open port on your router. Use the provided blue cable to make the colors match (jack to plug).

CABLE or DSL modem <--> Router <--> Vonage

When powered up, the Vonage box will look for a dhcp server on the WAN (blue) side of things. Most folks have DHCP enabled on routers for NAT, so the Vonage box will typically get an address in 192.168.1.x

Because your router provides NAT, the Vonage box will eventually get an IP address via DHCP and without much fuss you will end up with a Vonage dial tone.

For folks that know how to set up their routers with dd-wrt or Tomato firmware, the router will provide all the QoS that you need. Also, since the Vonage box relies on dhcp up to this point, you probably want to do the following and configure the Vonage box with a static IP so that it /doesn't/ rely on DHCP, so you can still make calls if your DHCP daemon goes down.

Follow these steps directly to gain access to the Vonage box admin page:

Pick a computer or laptop that you'll use temporarily to adjust stuff on the Vonage admin page at Unplug the chosen computer from your network or disable wireless. You need a computer/laptop with an Ethernet port to manage the Vonage box. Grab the yellow cable and plug it into the yellow jack on the Vonage box. Plug the other end of the yellow cable into the Ethernet port on the chosen computer.

You need to adjust your TCP/IP address settings to get access to the admin page! Find your Ethernet connection settings (Windows, OSX or linux, whatever you use). Record the working TCP/IP settings so you can restore them after. Change your IP address to Static, not DHCP. Set your IP address to, subnet mask and Default Gateway to This give you an immediate route to the admin page via the yellow cable (Vonage calls this the LAN side, yellow not blue). You''l never get to the admin page via the blue cable to start, so make sure you're hooked up to the yellow jack on the Vonage box.

Open a web browser and hit
The username is router, password is router.

Have fun!

When you're done configuring, unplug the yellow cable, store it, and return your computer to your network (Ethernet or Wireless, however it was originally). Return your computer to the original TCP/IP address settings. For most folks this means returning the TCP/IP stack to dhcp (or whatever static IP you had configured previously.)

Thank you very much for your post!
Reading through the questions and problems in this forum, I noticed a lot of trouble with the correct setup of hard- and software.
Many people are using more than one router (the max I've seen is three routers!) and subnetting and TCP/IP setup are often not configured correctly.
A great page which describes different hardware scenarios can be found at

Don't forget that the role of a router is to separate networks!

To explain how TCP/IP works is not that easy and requires a little bit more research.
Since in general most users have a home LAN in the private IP range (192.168.x.y / it is crucial to understand the importance of the subnet mask and that it determines the network portion of your LAN.
Without going into details, if you use the /24 ( subnet and you want all clients talk to everyone, you have to bring all devices into the 192.168.x range and keep that "x" constant.
For the "y" you can assign all numbers between 2 to 254 (1 is usually your gateway, 255 is broadcast).
In other words: If my PC's IP is I cannot talk to anything on the 192.168.15.y subnet.

I hope this helps a little and if you are interested in reading up on this, then there are a lot of good pages out there. One good example is this page:,289483,sid7_gci1016764,00.html

But, as I said, there are many more and they all depend on your level of interest and knowledge.

Thanks again, fossiker, for your post.
