PostPosted: Tue Jun 10, 2008 4:08 pm    Post subject: using rt31p2 as a bridge / switch Reply with quote Back to top

Hello,

I wanted to see if anyone has found a "better" way to use the rt31p2 as a bridge.

Here's my situation: I have FIOS, so I need to use the actiontec as my primary router. I then have a single cat5 cable running to my office, where I'd like to hook up the rt31p2, and plug a desktop and 2 laptops into it.

I'd rather not use it as another broadband rounter to avoid the double-NAT issues, but that is how I've got it hooked up. I also have devices like slingbox and a print server hooked up to the actiontec, so I would like to run on a single subnet.

I've seen posts on how to use the rt31p2 as a bridge by looping the WAN port back into 1 of the 3 ports, plugging the network into a 2nd, and then a PC into the 3rd. Problem with this is that it uses up all 3 of the ports with only 1 PC connected.

I'd like to use the WAN port to plug into the network and then have the 3 PCs connected to the other ports be able to grab a DHCP packet from the actiontec, as well as be on the same local subnet.

Anyone have any ideas?

Right now, my best idea is to buy a small 5 port switch and plug the Vonage and the PCs into it....

Thanks!

Its a little convoluted but, what you can do is turn DHCP off on the Vonage router, from the wall, plug in to one of the four switch ports, then plug in from the second switch port to the wan port. You'll need to enable remote access to access the switch after that on port 8080. The only issue with this is that you now only have 2 LAN ports, which I guess is fine if you only have 2 machines. Your way will also work fine, just get another switch and plug the Vonage box into one of the ports. If you're doing big transfers between the machines plugged into the switch and your PCs can support it, I recommend the NetGear GigE switches, I've got 5 of them running for over a year now and they all work fine and the price keeps dropping.

I that that is the same principle resolution as the others I've seen. I'm trying to avoid tying up 2 of the rt31p2 switch ports with an uplink and a loop.

sometimes you can get away with just turning off DHCP, but otherwise you're SOL unless you buy new equipment

For what you are trying to do I would just buy a small switch as you mention in your post. This is the most reliable way to get the additional ports you are looking for.

Butterman... I agree. I picked up a little Netgear 5-porter, and now I have it running exactly as I want.
