I guess we do pay more in taxes.
When I first started with Vonage, my bill used to be $16.49 ($14.99 plus $1.50 in taxes). Now the taxes are 4 times what I used to pay.
But Vonage doesn't understand is that there is competition out there and better deals, which is why I'm going to be disconnecting my service soon and moving on to better things.

It isn't Vonage who is charging the taxes, they are the ones who have to collect it for your State government, so no matter who you go with you will be paying the same fees.
I called Vonage back in April about getting a better deal and they first charged me $39.99 full meal deal, then I called for a deal and they reduced it to $29.99 after first year, then I called in April and told them I wanted a better price or I was going, that is when I got it for $24.99 unlimited calling, that is $15.00 off the going rate in Canada!

Good luck on your "better things", but from what I have seen, few if any have services like contact book and vonage talk. Even if you do not use these, few VOIP companies provide the quality that Vonage does on an ongoing basis. I would check the forums (DSL Reports, etc.) before making the switch.

My main reason for leaving is the total cost w/ Vonage. In the beginning, I found them to be a great deal. But as time went on, I found that they weren't crediting my account for international calls that didn't go through, the tacking on of various non-fcc mandated charges, etc. My $16.49 bill slowly creeped up to $21 (and that's only for the 500 minute plan) I've shopped around and Vonage's current rate for for a particular international destination is 5 times the average for the other VoIP providers in my area.
So just like I shop around for car insurance every few years, I'm doing the same and it turns out Vonage is EXPENSIVE. As far as VonageTalk is concerned, there are many providers out there that allow softphoning w/ no further charges.
Thanks for the heads up.

It will be sooooo easy to say good bye. I will soon be canceling my last Vonage line after more than 5 years. As soon as my number ports; I will be paying 19.99/mo total in place of Vonage's 30.75. And I don't have to prepay or agree to a contract. Plus, I'll have so many more features it's hard to imagine, but I have been doing it for years with my other lines so I won't be too amazed. (AND YES ! The service is stable. Been with the company almost a year, not one dropped call, not one choppy call, not one - one sided call)
Good bye, Vonage you were once a pioneer, and a visionary. You have however, lost your way, and are not positioned to make it in the future of the VoIP world. Your future is to spend tons of money bringing people in to the VoIP world, once they get used to it they will always leave you for something better and MUCH cheaper.
