This has me baffled!

If I remove my fax/printer machine from the phone wall outlet, no phone in the house works at all and I cannot recieve calls. If I plug it back in, every phone starts working. I've restarted my Vonage router and wireless router, with no luck.

Any ideas?

Eric, please give us the technical detail listed in the sticky message at the top of the forum. Also, give us details on how you've wired your Vonage equipment to the house wiring.

eric,

many faxes have two plugs. one for the phone line and one for a fax line. this way, you can have a fax setup with just one phone line and share it with your voice service.

i suspect that you initially set it up this way and then by unplugging your fax, you inadvertantly unplugged your phone line circuit hence, no phones work.

what you need to do is look in the back of your fax and see if you have a phone line going into it and another one coming out. if you do, then you have the setup i described above.

Vonage router plugs into the wall in a spare bedroom. But now that I think about it, this line used to be a second phone line at one time (back in the dialup days lol).

This fax machine has two plugs on it, one for the wall and a phone. The phone outlet is in our living room. If I plug a phone line from the walloutlet in the living room into the line jack on the back of the fax, Vonage works in the whole house. If I unplug this line, no Vonage anywyere.

I'm thinking I need to try plugging Vonage into a different jack to see if it fixes my issue. Very strange Eek

So let me get this straight:

Vonage adapter -> outlet in spare bedroom -> home wiring -> living room outlet -> fax machine -> phone

Is the above "schematic" correct?

If so, then why don't connect a phone to the outlet in the living room after removing the fax line and see what happens.

are you saying that when you unplug the fax machine and put a regular phone line in, there is still no Vonage?

Older homes have phone wiring in a loop from jack to jack. The wire is NOT cut when connected to a jack so the circuit continues to the next jack. I wonder if the wire was cut when connected to the spare bedroom jack, and somehow when the fax machine is connected it completes the circuit to the living room?

There's your key. Vonage device is connected to a phone jack that is line 2 in your house wiring. You are likely using a phone cord with 4 wires (2 pairs) to connect your fax machine to the wall jack. Your fax machine bridges the inner and outter pair of wires together. Your That's why it works with the fax maching connected; the fax is connecting line 1 to line 2.

Your suggestion to connect your Vonage device to a different wall jack will work. You probablly can also modify the jack its currently connected to so that it uses line 1. This website gives you some more details of phone wiring and how to modify it: http://www.ling.upenn.edu/~kurisuto/phone_wiring.html

I have no doubt that this is the correct explanation for a strange problem, but why in the world would the fax machine bridge the two pairs? It certainly shouldn't be designed to do that or it would wreak havoc on a home with two active lines!
