Hello,

I have my "home office" in an isolated room of our house. Unfortunately, this room does not have any wiring as far as network nor Phone lines. I've had Vonage (for more than a year now and very happy about the service) but it is connected to my Cable provider in another place of the house with this setup:

Cable Modem --> Wireless AP Lynksys -->via Eth--> Motorolla phone adapter -->RJ 11--> Standard telephone base

I access the internet via wifi from my laptop and desktop, and so far have been able to work with a standard cordless handset from my "home-office", but i really want to use the phone base since it has speaker and mute options.

I have been trying to research how to move the phone base to my home-office, or even move the Vonage phone adapater and connect via wi-fi, with no success.

Perhaps you can give me some light or suggestions on how to accomplish this without having to wire that room?

Thank you!!

Lud

It's tough with no wiring at all to the office. You could get a wireless access point to connect to your wireless and provide an ethernet port. Leave the modem and wireless router where it is; put the access point and Vonage box in the office. This will work, but wireless can be problematic and you may or may not like the results.

Other than that, I would consider trying to run a coax cable to your office somehow. Put a splitter on your cable service, run the coax, and put modem, router, and Vonage box in the office.

If it's easier to run a phone line into the office, do that. Connect it into the rest of the house wiring. Leave the equipment where it is and plug the Vonage phone output into the house wiring- with all the proper precautions, of course.

Thanks Steve. I realized it is somewhat difficult to accomplish what I want w/o wiring the room.

I read somewhere that If I share my Desktop wireless connection (wifi card) I could use the existing PC ethernet port and plug the Vonage phone adapter. I haven't really tried that, yet.

Well if you or anybody happens to hear something, please let me know. I will really appreciate it!!

Have a great week!

What you read is correct. You can use the laptop as a bridge to plug in the phone adapter if you want to leave the laptop running whenever you want your phone to work. It's been tried and it can be made to work, but if anyone on the forum has really liked it, I haven't read about it.

Hi,
Maybe I am missing something, but why not use a two line cordless phone. I have done this for about a year, with both an ATT and Vonage line att'd. I have the cable modem, wifi router, Vonage box, AND the base unit for the cordless phone, all in a closet.

A couple of rooms are wired for the 'net, others use wifi (I found the MIMO boxes solved most wifi distance/obstruction issues) and I have a few cordless phones throughout a large house.

I use the Uniden TRU 5.8 systems. They have great distance, loads of features, and now Sam's and Costco usually sell them.

ludwing, rather than add additional wiring (which would be easy and most effective), you can also consider getting a better cordless phone that has the features you want like mute and speaker phone. My relatively cheap panasonic has those features and it saves me from having to rewire.
