Hi ATA is probably a bad term to use here but it stands for Analog Telephone Adapter. You have an ATA/router combo. The ATA function is what makes your phone calls possible, the router provides a shared internet access across several devices (i.e. PC's, ATA, media centers etc.) through the use of one Public IP address. NAT stands for Network Address Translation. Essentially you have 1 public IP address (xx.xx.xx.xx or something similar) provided by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). NAT allows you to have several different internal IP addresses (192.168.x.x or something similar) for each piece of equipment attached to it using that 1 public IP. So what I thought might be happening is your device is registering with your router getting an internal ip of lets say so when Vonage servers send a call to your public IP the router then routes that traffic to But if a substantial amount of time has passed since there has been activity between your router and ATA it is possible the address has expired and your router will not know what to do with traffic coming in or going out from it.

So based on your further description, this is most likely moot. If it was a NAT problem NO CALLS would go through. You would not be able to make a local call then immediately not be able to call long distance.

At this point I'd be thinking there is problem on Vonage's side, not being able to route your calls properly. What you can do over the next few days while you wait for your husband is to keep track. See if can find any similarity. Can you make some calls to 206 AC or no calls to the 206. If some what exchanges? just one or several, etc. That will help Vonage correct the problem if it is in fact a routing issue on thier side.

Thanks for the explanation, Brian! Smile I can see why you had suspicions about that specific problem. Makes perfect sense.

I'll keep track of the calls that do and don't go through on your advice before calling Vonage. I wish I'd noted when the problem started and seemed to get worse now, but oh well! I've been more aware lately, and it mostly seems to be a problem with 10-digit dialing, as I've had trouble calling my husband if I dial the area code first or just hit the down arrow on the phone to call the last number that called me. But then even that's not an absolute, since I can call out within and outside of my area code sometimes. The only thing I never have trouble with is dialing 7 digits (within my AC, of course).

Anyway, thanks again for the great advice, and I'll let you all know how it goes, since I suspect I'm not the ONLY one who's ever had this problem.

Hmm, normally I would say that the problem there would be the adapter not reading the DTMF tones properly, and when the call is placed its dropping numbers (like if you dial 206-123-4567 it thinks you dialed 206-134-567) and never places the call, or calls ring an invalid number. However, with the Vtech phone, this shouldn't be the case, as it shouldn't be reading DTMF to place outbound calls. The RINGING tone is generated by the phone and not Vonage (depending on who you call), so if you're not hearing a ring, it could be an actual problem with the phone hardware.

Try adding a # to the end of your dialing. If its not catching all of the numbers you're putting it in, it should force the call to be placed anyway, and you'll get an invalid number message. Also, at the Tech 2 level they should be able to log your call (SIP not your Voice) and see how the device is placing these calls.

This is all contingent on the fact that you're actually experiencing a problem placing the calls, and you're real problem is not no inbound audio.
