I've been thinking about signing up for Vonage's annual pre-pay plan for $239.99, and was wondering how many other people are doing this. |

I would do it, but I am afraid that my term would go from month to month to annual. If I wanted to cancel, I would have to do it prior to the annual renewal.
I could be wrong, but the TOS talks about the term. |

Maybe I'm just too conservative, but I'd rather stay month to month.
Especially if you have been a customer for a while, you can just call and ask for better terms and they will drop your monthly bill from $24.99 to $19.99. |

A few months ago I signed up for the second time.
Saves money and no monthly bill.
Vonage has been solid as a rock for me. |

Yes it is a good deal, and I don't believe Vonage will be going belly up soon.
But this is a desperate ploy of a cash strapped company. Do you want to be a part of that? That is question you should be asking. When compaies start grasping as cash in this way i.e. pay up front large sums of money and we'll discount the total, it only means one thing THEY NEED CASH NOW!
And don't forget about the monthly fees not included currently at $5.81 or more than 23% of the monthly charge (for me anyway). Yes that is up from last month if you are wondering. |

It is merely opinion that a yearly pre-pay is a desperate ploy by a cash strapped company, however, such arrangements are not uncommon among businesses that are flush with financial resources. Analogous to a long term, bulk, payout for services is the "Long Term Contract" which guarantees a service provider an income for a minimum period of two or more years.
Applying the theory of "desperation" to companies who seek to lock individuals into long term contracts for the purpose of ensuring long term incomes, the entire telecommunications industry is in trouble.
Let this be a warning to all Verizon, Sprint and AT&T users. Check your cell-phones daily. |

I'm fascinated by how people are quick to paint bleak pictures from otherwise unremarkable information.
The marketing concept behind prepaying for services is well-established over thousands of industries and millions of transactions. Prepayment offers value to subscribers in return for persistence of income to providers. Alone, a discount for prepayment no more signals "desperation" than does offering any other kind of discount.
If saving money by prepaying is not to your liking--and taking some degree of risk no matter the provider--then that is your decision and an understandable one at that. (Paying by credit card offers a degree of protection for consumers should the provider not deliver as promised.)
I would offer if not prepaying is your inclination generally, as one example, it would be wise to give full consideration to not purchasing "advance tickets" on any airline in the world even though discounts range to a 70% saving for commitments often well beyond thirty days. |

Thanks for all the feedback, everyone. I've prepaid for one year, and the savings are actually better than advertised--about $70 for me when all the fees are included. |
