PostPosted: Mon Jan 03, 2005 12:57 pm    Post subject: HELP!! Vonage Newbie - No Phone 1 or 2 Light - No Dialtone Reply with quote Back to top

First off I am in the Bahamas and my experience with Vonage is borrowing a friends phone to make a call so I need some help from all you experts in here.

Okay,
I have DSL modem - Efficient Networks SpeedStream 5667 - If I'm correct it uses the Tango Manager program to work. I have DSL line coming into this modem and then connecting out to the Linksys RT31P2 broadband router which was sent directly from Vonage. The internet works fine with this connection, however I do not have a light showing on Phone 1 or 2 - Never have, Therefore I have NO dial tone.

I contacted Vonage 1st told me to check with my ISP to see if my DSL modem was in Router or Bridge mode - it is infact in Bridge mode and if I obtain an ISP automatically - which I do. Still nothing works. Emailed Vonage again and they told me to configure the Broadband router for PPOE which I have done via http://192.168.15.1 - When I check status here under voice is blank and under Router it says dissconnected no matter if I click on connect.

I have rebooted, unplugged at least 10 times. I must tell you this I can not tell my ISP provider that I am trying to connect a Voip router because they are also the ONLY Phone company in the Bahamas and therefore - Vonage is a BIG NO NO.

My computer has no firewall and as I said before I am able to go online without any problems. I need some serious help from you guys.

Thanks,
Kimberly

Tango Manager is a PPPoE client. When everything is configured correctly, you should not be using Tango Manager on your computer at all. Instead, you need to use the PPPoE client that's built-in to the RT31P2.

In the 192.168.15.1 page, change the Internet Connection Type from "Obtain an IP automatically" to "PPPoE". Then, put in your username and password. Service Name might not be required, but try to copy over whatever Tango Manager is using.

If you can get that working, then disable Tango Manager on your computer, because it should be able to get a connection directly from the RT31P2.

Just an FYI, when you get Vonage working correctly, your ISP will see the RTP traffic for your Vonage Service. They may shut down the Voip associated ports/traffic and you will be without service. Is Voip not permitted in the Bahamas or are you just guessing that "Vonage is a BIG NO NO?"

(this info is in response to a private message, but there's no sense in keeping it private):

I've never used Tango Manager myself, but when I said to copy the settings over, I just meant to look and see if Tango has a "Service Name" or something similar. If it does, then you should type the same thing into the PPPoE settings on the router. The service name, if there is one, is probably just the name of your ISP.

The most important setting for PPPoE is the username and password. Those must be correct or it'll never work.

The physical connection should go like this:
- The Ethernet port on the DSL modem goes to the "Internet" port on the RT31P2.
- Your PC's Ethernet card plugs into one of the 3 LAN ports on the RT31P2.

I had the same problem with my Linksys RT31P2 when I first hooked up. I was on phone with tech support for about 45 minutes. I was finally told that it might take about 2 hours for new firmware to update Linksys RT31P2. Waited about 3 hours - then posted here - as last resort hit reset button in back of Linksys RT31P2 and voila! the phone light lit up. Tech support said to keep reset button in for about 30 seconds. I can't remember if the last time I kept it in that long - may not matter. Don't know if this will help. Good luck!
