Is there anyway to get the V-Portal to work if I connect it to my computer directly instead of the dsl modem?

No, it must be connected to the modem, or at least connected to a router that is connected to the modem.

Well....yes, but some people have reported success using a computer to bridge connections between two network cards installed in the machine. It has the obvious disadvantage of requiring the computer to stay on in order for the telephone to work. Also, getting a bridged connection to work with DSL may be a problem, but it is possible.
