My RTP300 is dying... Bad call quality, dropping IP address etc...
So it is time for a new router. I am a computer geek that know his way around a network and wants to get a good quality Vonage router. My big need is 4-ports and would like something that can get a firmware updates. I also need something that can act as the first router in my network after the cable modem.
Guess I am saying that I want the best one out there. What do ya all think? |

After my router went out on me, I tried 2 Linksys routers with no luck. I finally settled on a D-Link DIR-655. I love this router! Call quality is fantastic because it has a built in QoS that works very well. The control you have over your network is fantastic.
This has everything you need and then some. 4 Ports, easy firmware updates and acts perfect if you place it directly behind your cable modem box. Plus you get wireless to boot. |

Bcpreece, given that you describe yourself as a computer geek looking for top level equipment, I'd recommend that you not look for a Vonage router. Get a good primary router, such as the one Aztec recommends. Other people in here recommend the WRT54GL, often with third party firmware from Tomato. Then put a simple Vonage adapter behind it. The PAP2 and the D-link VTA are fine for that purpose. Set QoS on the primary router to favor the Vonage box. |

Funny you say that because that is just what I did. I picked up the D-Link VTA and placed it behind my existing Wireless Router. I did pick up a D-LINK Gigabit Switch so I had enough ports to plug all of my stuff in.
My call quality is much better now. I havent had this good of a Voip experience for a long, long time. |
