Forgive me if this question has been answered before but I've already searched for a solution and I can't find a definitive answer.
Here is my current situation,
I have Comcast for internet and Vonage for phone service. I'm going to be switching over to AT&T for DSL internet service. I'm keeping my Vonage line and ordering a Dry Loop DSL connection from AT&T (no conventional phone service from AT&T).
My question is how do I wire my phone jacks with Vonage once I make the switch to AT&T? Right now my inside phone wiring is completely disconnected from the phone company and my Vonage router is connected to all the phone jacks throughout the house.
Once my DSL is activated I'd like to be able to connect the inside home wiring (with the Vonage router connected to it) to the DSL line coming in from the outside (This configuration would make things alot easier) I know your not supposed to do this with a DSL shared line but I want to know if this is possible with a DSL dry loop line. Is this a good idea or is this going to damage my Vonage router?
Please only respond if you KNOW the answers to these questions. I appreciate your time and help.
Thanks |

Need more information on the phone wiring in your house to best answer your question.
I’ve had success wiring Vonage in a 118 y/o house in which some of the phone wire was fabric-covered rubber insulated 16 ga wire, probably dating from the 1920s.
Need to know more information to provide a reliable course of action.
1. Do you have a single house with your own network interface device? Is it wired for two or more pairs? If not, how does the phone wire come in?
2. What kind of phone wiring is throughout your house? - Red, Green and Black, Yellow - White/blue, Blue/white and White/orange, Orange/white - Cat 5 - a mix
3. Are all your jacks wired for 2 line use? Or, at least, is the jack you will have the DSL “MoDem” attached to hooked up for at least two lines lines?
Please reply and I’ll try to suggest how to do this. |

I have the exact situation that you are asking about. My house was already wired with CAT 5 phone wiring (4 twisted pairs). What I did was connect the DSL line to one of the unused twisted pairs going into the house. I then wired the interior jack that the DSL modem is connected to use only the twisted pair that is brought in from the outside. Since this is also the jack where my V-Portal connects to the house, I added another jack (dual phone jack) and wired the second jack to use the regular two lines that I use throughout the house. E-mail me if this is not clear and I'll try to better explain my setup. |
