Is there a way to get a weeklong or so trial of Vonage with a temporary number so I can see how it works with my Comcast Cable before porting my number and canceling my Verizon |

yes, just sign up using a number they provide.
it comes with the 30 day trial....if you decide to keep the service....them chose to change your number by porting your number.

Agreed, but run the forum VoIP speed test (Speed dial drop down menu) before signing up. That will tell you a lot. |

I will do it that way. I have had this number for thirty years and it'd be very bad to lose it. |

Will I be charged at all for changing a number? |

Unless things have changed, transferring the number is free if you do it at the time that you sign up. If you wait, there's a $10 charge. Since you're a bit uncertain about this and the number is important to you, I'd recommend waiting and paying the $10. |
