Hello,
Update: With further research I have solved the problem.
I have found some info posted but my problem is still perplexing me as I am receiving the "This device is not setup..." error message
Here is my configuration:
Cable modem -> Dlink DIR-655 wireless router -> Motorola VT2442.
The Dlink is set to provide DHCP and is working properly. The VT2442 is to be used only for phone connection. All three of these units are physically together with no other switches etc between them.
Per advice from our forum advisors: (1) On the wireless router: I have added port forwarding for 53, 21,69,2400,80,123,5061, 10000-20000. I assigned this to ip address: 192.168.15.4 (random and outside DHCP range)
With DHCP, the Dlink assigns addresses starting at 100 up. Here is info from my computer:
IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.15.198
Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.15.1
The DHCP range starts at 100. I need to know what else needs to be set (for each menu item) on either device to make this work. I cannot find steps to give the VT2442 the IP address of 15.4. Prior to the addition of the dlink, I had the VT2442 performing DHCP and routing with no problems. Any advice/links appreciated, more info provided if necessary.. thanks |

Well I spoke too soon -- My call quality is still poor: my Vonage tranmission quality is still cutting in and out though I can hear others clearly. Can anyone lead me to documentation that provides specific steps to assign a static IP address and other settings required for the VT2442 to make sure I can check where I might be wrong. Also, the same thing I need on my router. I am in technology but this is a foreign area to me. I am about through with this and ready to put the VT2442 in front and then use the wireless router as an access point. Any help appreciated. This dearth of (and sometimes conflicting) info is driving me bonkers. |

You should hook the vonage box to the cable modem then hook your router into the lan on the vonage, the voice needs to be priority. If you do advanced port forwarding put your router in the DMZ of the Vonage router. You lose a packet loading a webpage, it will get rebroadcast but a packet missed in the voice stream can cause dropouts and "static". You might have to change the MAC address of the Vonage box to the Routers MAC, "clone MAC address". |

Does the DIR-655 have QoS? If so, I would strongly recommend that you enable it for your vt2442. Give the vt2442 port the highest priority and also give its MAC address the highest priority.
Do you know if the DIR can take aftermarket firmware? if so, I'd get it in a heartbeat.
I run my wrt54g with DD-wrt and it works great. |

I have stubbornly tried to place my wireless router ahead of the VT2442 for about three years now and, at times, my calls were choppy, I have tried 4 different routers and have settled on the new economy speed champ, the Dlink DIR-628. It too has Vos but, with heavy file traffic, my calls would be choppy.
Please take my advise Cable Modem>VT2442>Wireless Router and your problems will go away. Internet delays are not a big deal, choppy Vo-IP is horrible.
Think of it like a water pipe with two buckets. . Fill the Vonage request first. Anything left goes to the wireless network.
The VT2442 has not slowed down my wireless system. Speed tests are essentially the same.
If you have packet collisions between your cable modem and the VT2442, install a Hawking HBB1 internet booster |
