Post subject: Fax line/Voice line - any difference?
I need a dedicated line for faxing (incoming only). I will not be receiving or making voice calls with the
Vonage
service.
Is there any difference whatsoever between the voice and fax "lines" that
Vonage
provides (e.g. are they doing anything specific to handle timing issues in the fax protocol)?
Has anyone had experiences where they could only send/receive faxes on a fax line (that would not work on the voice line)?

Why don't you just use an eFax service like OneSuite's MessageOne Service:
http://www.onesuite.com/products_MessageOne.asp
It's $1.00 to $1.67 per month with a dedicated phone number and all you faxes are received in your e-mail inbox.
With OneSuite you pre-Pay $10 minimum which is good for six months. I use their long distance service to make cheap international calls on my cell phone.
I've been using them for years. Highly recommended.

It's got to be a fax machine. A computer is not an option.

I also use Onesuite.com Message One for my fax needs and it is not
Voip
.
Voip
on fax isn't that reliable so it is not advisable to use
Voip
for your fax.

To actually answer the question you asked:
Yes, there is a huge difference between
Vonage
voice and dedicated fax lines. The voice lines use a standard
Voip
voice protocol, which does not work reliably at all for sending and receiving faxes.
The dedicated fax lines use T.38 protocol, which is designed with the sole purpose of sending and receiving faxes. They will be very reliable for faxing, but generally will not support voice calls at all.
