Been with Vonage since Oct 2004 and have not regretted it at all. I make international calls every month and the call quality is great.

I'm on the $14.99 plan (500 minutes) and that's enough time for me. BTW I have the Linksys PAP2

The voice quality is usually very good, but there's annoying background noise-- a wooshing sound like wind blowing. I've been spoiled by years of near perfect silence on our POTS line. We have two Vonage lines and I opted for two adapters to eliminate a single point of failure for both lines. Each adapter has background noise, but one is worse than the other. The quieter of the two isn't too bad, but IMO it's still "too much" when compared to POTS.

Reliability-wise, I'd give it a 90% score. A few times a week I'm met with a fast-busy signal when dialing out-- sometimes hanging up and redialing works, while other times it requires several attempts before the call goes through.

Like all services in their infancy, Vonage will have some growing pains. But when I look at how Verizon has price gouged us for so many years by virtue of their regional monopoly, it's nice to FINALLY have another option for phone service. What makes it so much sweeter is being able to do that while saving over $120/yr on my local phone service alone, AND getting free long distance as well.

I haven't quite gotten to the point I trust Vonage enough to port over my POTS number and tell Verizon to get bent, but that day is probably in the not too distant future.

What adapter are you using? (We're using two RT31P2 units.) Consider yourself lucky with such a quiet line. Check out http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic2062.html and you'll see there are plenty of us not so fortunate. Sad

I have the RT31P2 adaptor/router (inbetween my cable modem and Airport Express router) and my service is excellent.

Very quiet line.. far better than the landline I ditched.

No dropped calls. No choppy voices. I think some people's issues may be with their ISP's rather than Vonage.

And, I'm saving around $750 per year now that I ditched Verizon!

Agreed, it's quieter than some of the landlines I've used at the homes of friends and relatives in rural areas. But for the past 25 years I've lived in a major metropolitan area and am only a mile from the central office. If I pick up the handset and hit a number to kill the dial tone, the line is perfectly silent to my ear. The only clue the line hasn't been cut is the lighted handset which is powered by the voltage over the wire.

I live in downtown Boston. What's rural about that?

Vonage is very quiet... far quieter than Verizon. Friends even notice how my line is quieter than their landline in Boston.

I think you must have an ISP problem rather than a problem with Vonage.

unlikely. it's probably the white noise, comfort noise, whatever you want to call it coming from the Vonage device.

It's probably has a lot to do with the age of the copper in the ground and on the poles, as well as equipment in the C.O. Our Verizon line has never been noisy, but it went from a barely audible "hiss" to perfectly silent a few years back when they strung brand new cabling throughout our area.

Actually, not. I have 2 lines with Vonage and 2 adapters... one is noticeably more quiet than the other. Also doesn't matter whether I use it at home or at work. I'm the network operations manager of a regional ISP/ASP and we have some fairly substantial connectivity there.

Well, sorry you're having problems with one of your adaptors.

All I can say is that the service from Vonage is really quiet here in Boston and is superior to Verizon.

The background noise issue reminds me of Seattle's infamous "pitted windshields" Lol
