So ever since I had Vonage are call quality is horrible no matter what setting we use. Right now if we make a call out the person recieving the call describes it as bad cell phone reception (cutting in and out). Incoming calls there appears to be no problem. I have chatted with customer service and have got no where. I was told by someone that my modem probably isnt the best for Voip so I wanted to know what is a better choice. Right now we have a motorola wireless surfboard.

My location is Stowe Vermont.

ISP is Stowe Cable

up is around 300 and down is around 700 kbps but I can test better when I am home.

Modem is a Motorola SBG900

Vonage adapter is a Motorola VT 2442

Setup is Modem, Network Switch which splits off to 2 computers and Network Printer and the Vonage adapter.

I am experiencing choppy audio on out going calls only. I can here the person I am talking to fine but they claim I am cutting in and out. In coming calls appear to be fine both ways but has in the past been choppy sound both in coming and out going.

I have to run the test when I get home but when I talked to tech support they had me run it and it was not very good.

So obviously the less I download and use up bandwidth the better Voip I have. How do I make it so I can download and still keep a good connection for my phone?

The quality of your Vonage calls is highly dependent upon the quality of your isp connection and available bandwidth. How is the quality of your calls when you're not using the internet and or downloading and uploading files? What is yourISP's advertised download and upload speeds? Do you have a router that has good QoS capabilities? A router with good QoS functions will enable you to give your Vonage device priority while you're uploading or downloading files when you're on a call.

I just looked at the specs of my Modem, and it said nothing about Qos. Can you make a recommendation.

I need you to respond to this question: How is the quality of your calls when you're not using the internet and or downloading and uploading files?

Your modem does not offer QoS, a wireless router does.

Call quality is better with no downloading. Recommendations for a router?

The Linksys WRT54GL loaded with third party firmware such as Tomato firmware, (most current version is 1.19) is a very popular wireless router on this forum. Although this is an excellent router, let it be known that if you have issues with your isp connection, the WRT54GL CANNOT correct such a problem. If your issue is solely related to distributing available bandwidth to your most time sensitive appliication, i.e. Vonage, setting up QoS on the WRT54GL "should"correct your problem.

Is your cable modem also a combo wireless router? I'm not that familiar with that model. You may want to consult with Motorola and ask them if there are any QoS settings within the SBG900 that could help your current situation.

It is a modem/wireless but I looked at the specs and I saw nothing saying QoS.
