I have the following setup...
Cable Modem -> LinkSys RT31P2 -> LinkSys BEFW11S4 -> PCs and another hub.
The RT31P2 is providing NAT/DHCP for the entire home network. The BEFW11S4 is operating on a static IP address, as a switch/wireless access point.
The RT31P2 stops working frequently. At least once a week, sometimes once a day, I need to unplug and restart the RT31P2. None of the other equipment needs to be restarted in order to restore the network to full functionality.
When I used to use the BEFW11S4 as my router, it would work flawlessly for months on end. I'd rather use the RT31P2, however, as my router so that I can take advantage of the QoS features.
I checked for a firmware update but I didn't find one on the linksys web site.
Thanks Mike |

Would you mind detailing how is your connection? I'm having issues with the same hardware.
Thanks |

Were you ever able to solve this problem? How? I am having the same problem with 1.28.00 firmware with a virtually identical setup to you. |

I'm having the same exact problem -- several times a week the RT31P2 stops responding to DHCP requests. At the same time it also stops responding to HTTP (web) requests. While this is happening, it still routes traffic to and from the Internet without a problem.
A reboot restores the network to full functionality. As with the original poster, I have a LinkSys BEFW11S4 acting as a dumb switch behind the RT31P2, though I don't know why that would be affecting the RT31P2's DHCP and web servers.
Any ideas?
The RT31P2 has firmware 1.30.00 right now.
thanks, Lee |

Has anyone made any progress on this? I'm having the same problem. It used to be once or twice a month, then a couple times a week. Now it's happening several times a day. I'm starting to think that this piece of hardware is going to fail. |

Hi cmiles,
I haven't made any progress, and my frequency is increasing also. Luckily, when this happens the router still routes ok, and the DHCP server is fixed by a soft reset (reboot) of the RT31P2. Still, it worries me and I of course wish there was a fix for it.
I wouldn't dare try to contact Vonage support about this, after my previous experiences with them.

Hey all,
I have the same problem with that router... My problem started on sunday when comcast had a DHCP Server go down. There server came back up, but ever since that point my router has been flaky. It looses the DHCP information every 45 min or so...for about 2 to 3 seconds, just long enough to disconnect me from a VPN for work. Now I have a my main PC hooked to the RT31P2, and my wifes computer hooked here. The third port runs to an old netgear MR814 that has wireless for my two boys connections. The netgear is setup so they can accessour home network...Now since the DHCP episode, whenever the RT31 looses its DHCP, it affects the netgear as well booting my sons off the local network. I have had comcast check the line, and have checked just about everything else, and it looks like the RT is dying. Here is a wierd thing as well...when ever the router looses its connection, about 15 secs after it gets its connection back...it dials my phone! I have a speaker phone hooked to the phone jack and the phone will dial!!! you can hear it...yet in the background is a fast busy. since I have had this router 6 months...I am assuming Vonage will not do anything...si I thought about calling Linksys.

In my case, the Linksys unit was over heating. I had it on top of my hub, and apparently the mild increase in temperature was too much for it. I've moved it over on the desk and it has been fine since. |
