My vonage is set up and apparently working. I have an HP Officejet 4215xi. The fax picks up a dail tone and appears to connect, then it prints an error report 388.
The HP web site says that it is a communication error and to try to send the fax again later. Of course the same thing happens over and over, just like Ground hog day. Any ideas? Do you think it could be a port on the vonage device or the modem that needs to be open?
Before the tech fixed the caller ID issue, the fax did work once. He did come back to the house, but between us, we haven't be able to figure out the issue. He did wonder if it was the baud rate.
Thanks

I take it you are talking about sending a fax. How many different numbers did you try to send to? I looked at the manual for your machine and it appears that your machine has a default setting of 33600 for the baud rate.
There are two things you can try.
# 1 Put *99 at the beginning of the number you are trying to fax to. That would be *99 then 1, then the area code, then the number.
# 2 Change the baud rate to a lower setting. The information on how to do this is on page 65 of your HP user manual.
I have a different HP fax machine then you do and using *99 generally works for me. My baud rate cannot be changed but a friend told me it worked for him on his HP fax. However there are a couple of people that I cannot fax to and they cannot fax to me. I believe that is because they have older machines and their modems don't play well with a VoIP connection.
Good Luck! |

Yes - I am using a fax machine. I had already seen that page on the Hp web site. It didn't work.
I just tried the * 99 , but I still am getting the error 388!
You mentioned changing the baud rate, should it be fast medium or slow?
Also, should I try the *99 after changing the baud rate?
Thanks
Any more ideas out there? |

You should try all the settings and combinations to see if one will work for you. Again you should be trying several different numbers to fax to. If you are just trying one number it may never work on VoIP. |

Well now you know that it's not your set up or fax machine. As I said in my first post there are several people that I cannot fax to or receive faxes from on my VoIP line. This is not a problem for me because I also have a POTS line that I switch to when faxing to these people and they call me when they want to fax to me and I switch the fax to the POTS line. I don't know of any other way around your situation. I believe that it's the fax machine on the other end. One person that I couldn't fax to had an old machine and they replaced it 2 months ago and we can now send and receive faxes over the VoIP line with no problem. |
