When I had Verizon landline phone, my outgoint caller ID was
displayed as "Kiersten Smith" with my phone number under it.
After I ported that number to Vonage, the caller ID became
weird. The name was spelled incorrectly on the other person's
caller ID box.
Last week, after getting no real help from Vonage tech support,
I decided to try things myself. I ended up logging to my account
on Vonage's website. I went to the account info change page and
change my first name to Bugs and last name to Bunny. I figured,
what's the worse that can happen, right?
Well.... this afternoon I called my mother... she didn't pick up
after I kept calling and calling. I knew for a fact that she was
home. It turned out that she didn't want to pick up the phone
because the caller ID box said "Bugs Bunny" was calling her... Needless to say, I had to explain to her what had happened...
I went back and changed my account name to just "K. Smith"
but no telling whey my caller ID will go back to normal.
Oh... does this prove that Vonage is not telling the truth when it
said it had no control over caller ID data? |

well.... it's a YMMV thing.... my co-worker who referred me to
sign up for Vonage service still has caller ID problems. He's been
with Vonage for about a year and half, after porting his home
phone number from Cox Digital Telephone to Vonage. Whenever
he calls me, my caller ID box says "Vonage Holdings".... |

You could have fun with this, use Barack Obama, George Bush, Osama Bin Laden, Harry Potter, the list goes on |

I thought that this was the primary reason this feature was not available for so long and there could be regulatory or legal issues.
This could be use to launch social engineering attacks and to obtain confedential personal information or gain unauthorized information or access.
I think the CID name should tied to the credit-card name or SSN and should be verified agains some such authoritative source else there is some law suite in waiting. |

Spoofing caller ID is still legal. It shouldn't be but it is. |

I highly doubt that this is the case. Editing your first name and last name to something will not cause your outbound caller ID to change. Vonage does not pass pass this information to the CNAM database. If and when it does, there would be a lot of validation that will take place because of this kind of scenario. |
