How long can V-Portal run on APC 1500VA UPS?
The model number is BX1500LCD. I just picked
it up from BestBuy for $129(after coupon and
certificates)

Thanks! Smile

Keep in mind....you will also need back-up power for your cable modem Wink

And hopefully if the power goes out....Your cable company's equipment won't be on the same circuit Eek

Kiersten, check your UPS documentation. They should give some examples of how long it will run at different wattages. Add up the wattages of the devices you'll have plugged into it- the V-portal, your modem, and whatever else you think you need. If the wattages aren't given on the device or on the power supply for the device, then check the voltage and current on the power supply. Multiply those together to get watts.

Now check the total wattage for your loads against the information in the UPS documentation. If there is a time number given for a number of watts close to what you have, that's your answer. If there isn't, take the closest wattage for which they give the time. Multiply the wattage they list times the time they give. Divide by the wattage for your total load, and that's your answer. Example- if they say the UPS will run for 30 minutes at 100 watts and your load is only 10 watts, then the answer is 30 x 100 / 10 = 300 minutes, or 5 hours.

It should be several hours if you're just powering your V-portal and modem.

Just a note concerning backup power for Vonage setups.

In my opinion, it is more important to get extended run time rather than high power output for the backup device. Connecting your broadband adapter and phone adapter will only draw few watts from the system.

Therefore, what you should be looking for is a device with higher capacity batteries. Most computer-oriented UPS have very weak batteries (10Ah or less). For the APC 1500VA UPS, it uses a RBC7 battery which is a 17Ah unit, which is better.

When I got rid of my land line to only keep Vonage, I replaced my Tripplite 750VA UPS (with a 7Ah battery) with a very interesting device. It only outputs 400W (which is several times more than what most Voip phone setups use) but it has a 40Ah battery. In this case, it would give you twice the run-time the APC 1500VA could give you.

If you're in Canada, the device is sold by CanadianTire under the name NOMA Backup Power 400. If you're in the USA, the device is the Xantrex Powersource 400. They are both the same device and you can get them for less than $199. When in sale, I saw them at regularly at $149 and even down to $99.
