I was so happy to switch to Vonage, feeling like I was escaping ATT. Only to find out the service is useless because my calls from my work to my house are long distance! My cell calls fine. All of my local family and friends are killing me because they can't call. Family is extra heated because we have a newborn. I'm getting it bad from my wife because I look like I got a good serving of "you get what you paid for!" I emailed tech support which promptly responded with a link to a non-Vonage website that I assume was supposed to explain I am SOL. Unless i'm way off, there was no resolution offered. Please, there has to be a way to make this service work, I want it to work!

Just in case someone that has any experience with my issue stumbles upon this, I found this thread: http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic21523.html+long+distance

Is that the problem? A number needs to be released or something???

Can you give a little more detail? Why is your Vonage number long distance? Is it in the same area code? Did you select the same city/town? Vonage doesn't offer a local number in your city?

Were you able to transfer your number to Vonage? Take a look at the following forum thread...your situation appears to be similar to theirs. http://www.vonage-forum.com/ftopic1832.html

I originally had a bundle through Time Warner (Cable, Voip, internet). ATT offered their new fiber optic internet and cable package (Uverse), which has been great. I canceled my Time warner which sank my chances of getting my number transfered. I guess I figured ATT would offer a competitive phone package with what I purchased from them, wrong!

That thread you found is exactly what i'm experiencing. I just got off the phone with Vonage Service. The lady says even though you're having to dial long distance, it isn't billed as long distance.I hope she's right. I'd hate to tell everyone to call without worrying about paying. I guess we'll see...

others will get charged if they call your number and if it ment to be outside of there calling plans, you can call others free since its inlcuded in your calling plans. type in your number on this website, it will tell you which exchange/city it belongs to based on that you can see if its local or long distance.

http://www.numberingplans.com/?page=analysis&sub=phonenr

if its long distance, call back Vonage and ask for local exchange number.

also if you want to get your number back from timewarner you can call them back and open account and see if you can recover your number then once it become active, you can then transfer to Vonage.

Whether or not a call to your phone is considered long distance isn't dependant on Vonage, but on phone company and plan of whoever is calling you.

If Vonage doesn't have a number available in your local exchange, or in the exchange of those who are calling you, you can always opt to pick up an 800 number service. This is very affordable, just an additional $4.99/mo with 100 incoming minutes, additional minutes are billed at 3.9 cents/min.
