Post subject: V-Portal and IW problems w/ multiple runs
I work as a field engineer for a telecom company and install
Vonage
VOIP
plenty. well I finally talked to someone in advanced tech support that knows how the V-portal truly functions. to solve the problem with having to re-boot the V-portal daily after connecting to the IW w/ muliple runs you need to only use a 1-pair RJ 11 cable from the ATA to the wall jack.

Interesting. That's the solution to a variety of problems with various adapters, but I wouldn't have expected it for this problem. Did he indicate why?

Maybe there is crosstalk from the wires not being twisted like in CAT5 that cancels out interference with the specific twists of the wires.

it was several months ago so I don't remember the specifics. but it has something to do with the way that the v-portal monitors the voltage/current on the 2nd pair which causes an error that requires a reboot. so basically the simple fix is to cut off both connectors and re-crimp the cable only using the primary pair from the ATA to wall-jack.

Single pair fix doesn't work for me. I have a 3 homerun single pair system with only reg/green connected. As soon as the v-Portal is hooked up with the single pair to the wall with NO PHONES ATTACHED TO ANY WALL OUTLET and I reboot I get the error message. The lines have been tested for shorts, voltage and miswiring and it's fine. A phone directly connected to the device is perfectly fine. As soon as I plug it into the wall jack and reboot it fails. My fix was to get a Motorola device.
