I have read here thru all of the things people advise and done them all. I have had my Vonage only a week and the first day i set it up and faxed it WORKED> I was so happy and it worked the first time with No adjustments, etc. Now, One week later , i cannot fax at all. Dials- i hear dial tone, goes thru and then get code 388 communications error. HAve been trying all day.
Did the baud down to 9600, turned off ecm, reset all settings as they suggest here, put my bandwith on high,. Nothing works.
Why would it work one time and then not??
I have a dsl splitter filter attached with it , as a regular splitter does not fit into the modem- that is how idid it last week and it worked!
HAve tried several connections, and the phone works fine with any of them, and fax dials with tone, but will not finish fax.
Very frustrating. read all of the things here and did them all to no avail.
Any suggestions?
I have comcast - mega speed , so not a bandwith problem.

I have had the same trouble. Unplug everything, wait five minutes, plug in your dsl modem, wait for it to aquire a signal, then the next device, etc. If you use a LinkSys PAP device try a hard reset (**** 877778, 1) or something like that. It will reset the PAP back to factory settings. This has worked for me. I have also found that some computer fax programs just will not work with my HP 5610. I believe it to be the software not the phone line.

Yup , did this as well. Thought it was going thru- connected to receiver, etc , then , nope, error code , same one communication error 388 at the end.

I set up my new All-in-One HP back at the beginning of December. Had no problems with sending or receiving faxes, even with the pass through of the answering machine attached to the back end. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I can no longer get faxes in or out. Multiple error codes in the 340-389 range. I've taken it all the way down to 9600 (could go fast before this), taken off error correction, tried multiple fax numbers, etc. Same D-Link DIR-655 router and phone adapter since the start. We have been able to use an older Panasonic standalone fax to get by...and that one seems to work??? Made one adjustment to the SPI or SIP that was suggested on here, still no luck. *99 did not help. I'm currently at a dead end...

I have exactly the same problem - it worked once and now will not work. I also get the tone and the transmission, then the error 388. have had Vonage about 2-3 weeks. I had some other problems, but the tech came out and fixed them. He couldn't find a fix for the fax tho Rolling Eyes

I am uding ATT Uverse what internet service are you using?

OH - I don't think this will help, but you can get a regular wall jack splitter from Radio Shack or somewhere and plug it into the wall jack to see if that helps. You shouldn't need to use a DSL splitter.
