I live in a joined apt and my internet is run from the front apt to mine via an ethernet cord. Last week we had an issue and a gentleman came to fix it, but since he did, my Vonage no longer works and gives the error message "internet down try and restart modem or check pppoe". Well, my internet works just fine and the modem was restarted. We don't use a password to access the internet so I don't think i have to set up the pppoe (but then what do i know..that's why i'm on this site). Anyway, if someone could give me a suggestion I'd GREATLY appreciate it cuz i've been out of a phone for almost 2 weeks. BTW, I'm not sure what kind of connection we have, it might be DSL

Please report back the following information:

Do you have internet when connected through your Vportal or just when connected directly to your PC?

Connect your PC directly to the ethernet (no VPortal), and make sure you have internet on your PC and do the following:
On your PC, click start, click connect to, then choose "show all connections".

Double click the "local area connection" icon, click the support tab and then chilck on "details". Copy what you see and post here.

Then connect your VPortal between the internet and PC and repeat the above procedure, post here.

Then goto 192.168.15.1 in your web browser go the the basic set up (see http://www.vonage.com/help.php?keyword=VPortal_WebUI&sectionID=basic&refer_id=WEBTS0706010003W1&promo_id=USVONRPFMF ) and report here if set to DHCP or PPPoE. Then report the status information (see http://www.vonage.com/help.php?keyword=VPortal_WebUI&sectionID=status&refer_id=WEBTS0706010003W1&promo_id=USVONRPFMF ), are you connected via DHCP or PPPoe, the IP Address, the Gateway, the DNS servers. Make a note of that information and post here.

ok ed, i did what you asked and the info is below, but when I tried the http://192.168.15.1 I got a cannot display page message from explorer. I tried it with the ethernet cable plugged directly into my computer and i also tried with the ethernet cable plugged into the v portal (for my connection i plug it into the blue and then the other cable from the yellow to my computer. that's the way i did it when my Vonage worked). anyway, here are the results

With ethernet directly into computer:

Physical address- 00-0F-1F-B1-B8-66
IP address- 192.168.99.198
subnet mask- 255.255.255.0
default gateway- 192.168.99.1
dhcp server- 192.168.99.1
DNS server- 192.168.1.1
Wins server- (blank)
lease obtained 4/4/08
lease expires 4/14/08

With ethernet in v portal and connected to my computer:

Physical address- 00-0F-1F-B1-B8-66
IP address- 169.254.231.71
Subnet mask- 255.255.0.0

It appears the network in front of you (the front aprtment) has stacked routers, which is not helping you at all.

I THINK what is happening here is that the Vonage device is connecting to 192.168.99.1 (the gateway) just like your PC to get it's IP adress (your PC grabbed 192.168.99.198 which makes me think the router in the front is set to starts dishing out IP's at a pretty high IP adress, say something like 192.168.99.195 and the lower ones can be used as static (this assumes you are not sharing with the entire apartment complex, just your neighbor).

The problem probably is (you did not give me the Vonage status settings I asked for), is that the Vonage device is also going to 192.168.99.1 for it's DNS, while your PC went to 192.168.1.1.

What you can do (if I am right) is set your Voange adapter to a static IP , some odd one that is lower, like 192.168.99.97 (hoping your neighbor did not choose this one for some static IP set up), set your gateway to 192.168.99.1 and the DNS to 192.168.1.1.

Your PC will then get is setting from the Vonage DHCP make sure it is on) and should pass the 192.168.1.1 DNS to your PC.

ed, i have NO idea how to do any of what you just told me... i could barely even follow, but i think i got the gist of what you were saying. Would it be possible for you to walk me through how i'm supposed to set a static ip. because honestly, i'm lost.

also you said i neglected to give you some info. I gave you everything i could find. should i look for something else? Oh and it's just 2 apts.

OK,

I am a little conerned your computer is not getting an IP from the VPortal as it should. You may need to do a reset of the unit, but first follow the instructions below

With the computer plugged in to the Vportal, type http://192.168.15.1 in to your web browesr. You should see a login page, if so enter router in the User Name field.
Enter the password in the Password field. The default password is router.

If you do not get the login page press the reset button on the back of the unit for 10 seconds, should reset the router to factory specs.

At this point try loging in again. You also might get ucky and everything will start working Confused

If still no internet on your PC and no phone, go to the the status page of the Vportal and let me know what the IP is, the Gateways is and the DNS is.

i typed in the address, got to the page, put in router as the password, but when i pressed enter the page didn't load and i got the 'internet explorer cannot display page' message. Sad So, i reset the unit, tried again, and the same problem occurred Cry

you asked about the status page of the Vportal and letting you know what the IP is, the Gateways is and the DNS is. However, i'm not sure how to do that. Is that the same thing I did before when i checked the the internet connection?
