Traveling New Zealand for a few weeks and hitting the paid Internet cafes with various forms of restriction inspired me to create an "all in one" Pelican case based setup with everything to browse the 'net and make calls while traveling. I have a few design highlights and questions:
-Laptop
-One power cord to run everything (international adapters)
-One Cat5 cable can drive everything
-Wireless bridge functionality to drive from Wifi connection
-QoS Router (perhaps wireless) shares 'net access for calls and data
-RJ45 couplers/crossover adapters/low profile cables
-(Opt) IPod charge and Vehicle FM/DC power kit
-(Opt) GPS system with international maps
-(Opt) Portable printer/scanner
I may be just making this difficult. Perhaps I'd be fine with my laptop OR a public terminal AND a V-Phone - especially since I have a 3G card for the states. Questions:
0. Any good ideas for the project?
1. Can you register more than one device on a plan, only using one at a time?
2. If not, is it easy to transfer your Vonage plan to a different device. I certainly don't want a V-Phone for my home access.
3. Can you use the software Vonage with your existing hardware plan? |

download vonage talk http://alpha.vonage.com
You just need a computer with an internet connection either wired or wi-fi, headset with mic or built into the computer, usb phone or bluetooth headset to handle the calls.
I use VT when traveling in Europe and I have free internet. You can call any North American number and you can also receive phone calls on it. Once you open VT, it call forwards/simulring all your calls to VT, while your home phone will still ring. You can use both your Vonage line and VT at the same time.
If you had a V-phone you can only use one device at a time, not good if you want to call home, plus the V-phone costs you money while Vonage Talk is free! |

VT may work for me - I already pay to subscribe to a "world service" so that isn't so much the issue - it's more about having a "permanent" setup with a real phone at home, and using a different device to travel with.

If you already travel with a laptop then VT is the way to go, then you don't require to haul around another adapter and you can still use your vonage adapter at home. |

But many of the Internet places don't have Wifi, they're basically locked up coin-op computers. V-Phone would work better in that case. I guess I could use V-Phone and VT both on the same plan. It'd just be a matter of transferring my account info from my home (Vonage enabled) router to the V-Phone.

Ok, I was thinking you were going to be using your own laptop. Most "internet cafes" that make you use their computers usually block access to the usb ports so you don't load things on their computers. |

Where can I buy;
-One Cat5 cable can drive everything
-Wireless bridge functionality to drive from Wifi connection
-QoS Router (perhaps wireless) shares 'net access for calls and data
-RJ45 couplers/crossover adapters/low profile cables [B][fade] |
