Post subject: dlink vwr losing settings if power goes out
Hi
I just bought my second dlink vwr (i didnt want another one but thats all the store had). This new one has the same as the one i got three years ago.
I set it up with my SSID, passwords...
But if the power even blinks off. i lose it all and have to reprogram. Any one else having this problem?
solutions?

Yep....I loose the WEP setting evertime the power is switched off. Incidentally, where I live really really warms up during summer and I switch off the router if I am not home and the air is not on. I believe WPA settings are not lost but then I have not tried that as yet.

To add insult to injury, Vonage would not admit the problem. then when i finally got them to allow me to get a new device all the store had was the dlink. but i thought, they must have fixed it by now. its been three years since i bought my first.
NOPE. still does not work.
The next time i called vonage, they told me it was losing its setting because i didnt' use IE. Some how firefox was the problem.
CRAZY. and support actually argued with me that this was the case.
Oh well.

Post subject: VWR-VR configuration setting gets cleared
Model: VWR-VR configuration setting gets cleared when powered down or during the soft reboot using web interface. I called up d-link to check any firmware upgrades, Surprisingly the support person said, they only provide the box, software is written by vonage [ I don’t believe this because I have at least 6 dlink devices all have almost same web interface] . Then I had to call Vonage support, interestingly, lady did not understand what I was exactly saying.. They made me reboot my PC few times and finally said they are working on fixing the problem and they will send the fix to me in email.
I am happy with the product except the fact that it loses the setting.

Just so you know Dlink isn't really lying to you. The Vonage firmware is based on Dlink's, but has all of the Vonage specific stuff added to it. Dlink would not be able to give you an updated version of firmware because it would not have any of the Vonage specific code in order for it to act as your VOIP device.
Not that they really explained this to you, but it is true. Vonage is the only one you can get a firmware update from.
Many people have noted this issue in this forum, so if you do get a firmware update via email in the future it would help many people here if you posted it so that people knew they could call support to get the update.

Yes, as you've heard, it's an old story. I recommend a small UPS dedicated to modem and Vonage box, even for people who don't have the D-link problem. Maintaining phone service has a high WAF (wife acceptance factor).

Having had Vonage service for over two years and been OK with it, I recently bought a VWR. And returned it having given a really good try at getting it to a state that I can live with it.
Bottom line is this:
If you have recently bought a D-Link/Vonage VWR return it.
If you have one and can't return it then destroy the wireless circuit in it. You may then need to buy a non-Vonage good quality wireless router, there are lots of them. The Linksys/Cisco WRT54GL is one of the best made and best supported (the firmware is open source).
If you continue to use the VWR and fail to destroy the wireless transmitter your network will become unsecure at the next power cycle and you will be "wardrived" hacked into.
If you are new to Vonage and wondering what to buy, then buy HARD-WIRED phone products from Vonage, not wireless. Vonage wireless gear is an open invitation to identity thieves. Buy only non-Vonage wireless gear.

Post subject: VWR VD Security- Failure to enable
I just installed the vwr-vd router, and am having problems setting the security of this unit. When I set up the SSID and then the security type and password, I press apply, and then it says I have to re-boot to save and apply the settings I just made. I am setting it up for wpa (or the easy setup) security.
When I have re-booted and go to my other computer on this network, I can log in but there is no security shown. The new SSID name is shown, but it says there is no security on my network.
What am I doing wrong? I have read that you lose all of these settings if you lose power, but I have not lost power. Is it just that I re-booted, as it says I must to apply these changes?
What do I do to get my network security to work.
By the way I just changed out my VT1005 vonage supplied box, for this D-Link VWR vd box, from Best Buy for 99.00 and get a 70.00 rebate. I just could not get the VT1005 to work with the WGR614 v7 from Netgear. No communication- no internet- no login possible with the Netgear. This VWR seems to be great except for this security issue.
Vonage tells me that they have no solution, that they have reached the end of their emulator system???
Is there a solution out there?

Take HBlack's recommendation and return your current device in exchange for the V-Portal.

Post subject: Failure of Vonage to protect their users - VWR Power issues
While researching an issue related to my own Vonage VWR router, I found that many other users are having the same issues. When power is lost, the device loses it settings. This causes issues with security and while Vonage is aware of the problem for several months, nothing has been done.
This is quite discouraging and represents neglect of those using their product. It is incumbent on Vonage to protect their clients from poor quality such as this.
For those who discover the issue after months without power issues, is it reasonable for the store that sold the unit to take it back given :
a) Vonage knows this is an existing issue
b) It has been months since the store sold the device and now restocking is an issue?
Additionally, what about those users who don't know this could be an issue and now open themselves up to huge issues of hacking and attack. Even Microsoft takes security "somewhat" seriously and quickly works to supply patches to resolve issues like this.
Suggestions such as get a power backup unit are reasonable but why do so just to protect a poorly written product? Spend additional cash because Vonage is not doing what even DLINK builds into the base image?????
I just want to say that I have started to think Vonage is loosing its luster while trying to capture market share. Not addressing an issue like this is just poor business and will probably lose this customer for good.
