God darn thing will not remember my port forward settings. I'm not even doing custom settings i just choose from the list, it transfers over to applied rules list, and then i hit save. Boom. that should be it right?

yea.. it works for maybe a day or two then somehow out of nowhere it doesnt work. Then what do i see? the damn configuration is gone.. deleted. ****. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this at all? Or am i sol? omo (on my own)?

There has been problems with the Motorola series of routers, when they lose power also lose their settings. On this board, most of the posts have been about the VT2542.

My VT2142 seems to hold it's settings. I have firmwre 11.4.1-r070201-1.3.2 -r1 installed. Chcek your version, if older perhaps you should call tech suport at Vonage and ask them to push the latest firmware update to your 2142.

thank you for response ed. I have exact firmware version you listed there. Also , i dont know if a power outage causes it. Last night i set up a port opening again, checked a few times, logged in an out of the setup page, and it was still there. So today I open up again, and there.. gone again. !! Argh..

another idea i just got is simply setting my server computer with static ip then assigning open ports.

But i hate workarounds i want to try to do it with DHCP.

Port forwarding is generally not a good idea with DHCP, at least for the entire range of the subnet. I port forward for VNC and FTP.

What I do is use DHCP on a router after the vt2142 for ports 3-100. I then set a static IP for the server, 130 and also for the wireless access point, 245

The client machines get their IP's between 3 and 100 via DHCP, the server and the wireless access point are static.

My vt2142 is before a router, which is assigned a static IP of 192.168.15.2. I start the VT2142 on DHCP at 192.168.15.3, which essentially takes it out of the mix. I found that the Lease would continue on the VT2142 for 192.168.15.2 and it would assign 192.168.15.3 to the router if the router were turned off or whatever, disabling my port forwarding.

The other thing I had to do was set the gateway and the DNS to 192.168.15.1 on the LAN and the WAN sides of the router. Then added the opendns.com's DNS addresses as seconday DNS adresses for good measure.

So I have port forwarding on the VT2142 for FTP and VNC to 192.168.15.2 and on the router to 192.168.55.130 (the server).

Edited: Another advantage of this set-up is I can browse across the subnets, access 192.168.100.1 (the Cable modem) 192.168.15.1 (the Vonage Adapter), 192.168.15.2 or 192.168.55.1 (the router), and all of the devices in the 192.168.55.xxx subnet from any machine on the 192.168.55.xxx subnet.

I also set up QOS on the vt2142 for Vonage talk.
