my niece wants to get the Vonage V-Portal and use it in her college dorm room.... the dorm has only one ethernet jack on the wall, whcih goes to her PC right now...
are there any special configurations that she need to change in order to do this? she has no idea what kind of connection that college on-campus dorms use....
Thanks! |

Plug the ethernet cable (that is currently plugged into the computer) into the v-portal blue port and another ethernet cable from the v-portal yellow port to cpu (where the original plus was). Should work fine as long as they have good internet speeds. |

Many colleges and univserities have sohpisticated security requirements and filtering mechanisms to protect their network and the students PC's.
Check the college website for IT set-up or conatact their IT people.
In my daughters case, a CD was issued that ran a pre-certification of her PC, turned on her firewall, added AnitSpam software if it was absent and made sure she had a funtioning anti-virus. If not, her MAC address was not added to the authorized PC's on the campus.
I guess one could clone their MAC to the router, but this is not the ONLY scheme that the universiies are using. Other schools have outlawed and or limited peer to peer applications like bit torrent. Their filters MAY construe Voip as a peer to peer application and block it.
Alternatively, some universities use Voip for their campus phone sytem. Again, I would check with the University. |
