I have the following setup : cable modem ( comcast service) then a Netgear 5 port switch , then a Netgear RP 614 router running DHCP with the ATA ip address set to DMZ and appropriate ports forwarded . However when i am speaking on the phone sometimes , not always though , my outgoing voice drops , the call is maintained and I can hear the other people but they cannot hear me ? Any ideas ? |

I stuck the ATA in my DMZ instead of forwarding all those port ranges and here is what happened.
1> All the script kiddies in Internet Land started trying to hack into the ATA = Bad 2> Because of 1 above, my incoming traffic went up by a factor of 1000 (or so it seemed) = Bad 3> The phone rings but when you answer you can't hear who's calling - dead air = Bad 4> The phone rings and the caller can't hear you = Bad
So all in all, putting the ATA in the DMZ was a bad idea (but worth a try), forwarding the ports works but it does mean punching all those holes through your firewall.
I guess you can't win. |

I tried doing the no DMZ and only port forwarding and got the same issue .... On the other hand the script kiddies must not have found me because I am monitoring the bandwidth usage of the switch and not seeing anything bit the ATA talking back and forth every 30 secs or so . I'm beginning to think its either in the modem or in the comcast network ? If I use pc to phone with iconnect , the same thing happens , its definately a port issue but may be upstream from me . I was hoping to see some other people with the same issue and some creative answers .............. |

I'm using Vonage with Comcast. I don't have to forward any ports and it send/receives mint. |

Jcookeman , what router and modem are you using ? I am interested to see the differences between you setup and mine . |

I had the same problem, and moving from the toshiba modem to the motorola solved it. (I just took the modem back to my ISP(roadrunner) and had them give me another one).

Same problem here in mass with Comcast, started 2-3 weeks ago.
It also appears they dropped by upload bandwidth to 192k, from somewhere in the 300s

I had exactly the same problem. However it only occured when i was talking to someone and clicked on an internet link at the same time. Some told me port forwarding would do the trick and it didint but you should still do that. Are you using an RCA cable modem? Cause apparently there have been a lot of problems with it and the ATA. I called Vonage about this problem and they said that indeed there have been many incompatabilities with the modem and the ATA. However, if you read my last post, which is the next most recent topic in the forum, i recieved a new ata and things are working fine and the problem we're talking about has stopped. So all i can say is if you have an rca maybe you should go from there. If not, you might be losing packets of data while you surf the net which somehow affects ur Vonage service when u surf. Vnage told me to download a 30-day trial program called pingplotter that check for lost paclets. www.pingploter.com If you encounter lost packets you need to contact your isp and they have to do osmehting bout that. Hope all of that stuff helped, somewhat.

I'm having this problem as well. I'm using Comcast and a LinkSys router. I connected the ATA directly to the router's hub and calls go out and I can usually talk for a while before loosing the ability to talk. I can still hear the other side just fine. Is there anything I can do to minimize this problem? I've had my Vonage phone for 1 day and so far every call has terminated by me hanging up and calling back because my voice had dropped. |
