can I use fax line for voice and vice versa?
Does the Vonage system actually know the difference?
Thanks! |

Yes.
Not alot of difference but the fax line does have a few of the features stripped. Otherwise, the only issues that would arise is with bandwidth settings are fixable |

My understanding is that a few settings are changed. FAX lines will tend to be probably a tad more delayed, for example, so the data packets can be built more accurately. I assume Vonage uses this for their FAX lines. However, it's very unlikely you'll be able to tell the difference on a phone call - the voice reproduction should be every bit as good.
Also, as outerfire mentioned, you won't get all of the features on the line. Not much sense in putting call waiting, etc, on a line for a FAX machine.
But, sure, it should work fine. |

It is working for me. As NateHoy said, you won't get all of the bells and whistles as a regular voice line but, as a second line, it works great. |

I use my Vonage residential voice line for fax when I need to fax long distance, so far has worked well. A couple of changes on i the fax machine helps insure this, setting the BAUD rate to 9600 and turning ECM off. |
