PostPosted: Fri Apr 04, 2008 1:34 am    Post subject: broadband, laptop and vonage - can I travel ? Reply with quote Back to top

I will be travelling but need to attend some long conference calls, just thought it may be cheaper if I can take my Vonage router with me.

I have verizon broadband access card, a laptop with wireless and rj45 connection and a Vonage motorola router.

Is it possible for me to connect to the internet using the broadband access card, then connect the Vonage router to my laptop, configure my laptop as a gateway and then use the phone to dial out?

Has anyone done this? How can I configure the window vista as a gateway? I will be leaving in about 12 hours and didn't consider this as an option initially Cry

thanks for the help
Michelle

I can't say for sure if what you are trying to do is possible, but then again it might work. I do know that Vonage has an application called Vonage Talk that will allow you to receive and make calls from your laptop PC...all you need is a headset (or you can use the built in speakers of your laptop) with a microphone. As long as the quality of your internet connection is good, your call quality should also be good. You can download Vonage Talk from here: http://alpha.vonage.com/

I have used verison broadband access with "some" success along with Vonage talk. I think (would need to double check) Vonage talk uses a low badwith codec (kind of like setting your bandwidth saver to the lowest settings.) If you use Vonage talk, I would recommend a headset with mic (bleutooth or otherwise) as the PC speakers and mic. really do not work well.

Regarding using your ATA, you can set up internet sharing on your laptop (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306126 ). Of course you would also need t pring a phone, since Hotel phones may nor may not be compatible.

My daughter has two laptops at school, one on a hardwired network , then she set up ICS to allow it to share the internet with her other laptop via wireless (did not want to buy a wireless access point), you would just be doing the opposite, though the NIC you would be sharing from would be your broadband card.

While you can do this, and sometimes it might even work, that's a lot of stuff to be carrying around, and the Internet connection may or may not be good enough to support it. ICS can be problematic, the setup (while not hideous) is rather complex and cumbersome to set up each time, etc.

You can get a Softphone account through Vonage for about $15 a month that allows you to use your PC speakers and a headphone directly to make calls, which is going to be easier, more portable, and probably better quality.

I used to telecommute and I dragged my Vonage WRTP54G and a basic handset around with me, and as a former road warrior, I can tell you that (a) that's a lot of gizmo to schlep around, and (b) if airport security sees all them wires and doodads and whatnot in your bag, be prepared for some possible extra delays. I only got hand-checked once, but it isn't worth the hassle.

And I was able to hook mine directly to an Internet connection, without having to resort to ICS from my laptop.
