how does Vonage offer unlimited int'l calling to countries that charge local landline calls by the minute?

I will use country XYZ as an example. If I was calling from a regula
landline phone to another landline phone(both in country XYZ),
the local landline phone company charges about 3 cents per
minute. They do not have the flat rate landline plans like we do in
the US.

The funny thing is that country XYZ is included in my Vonage
Unlimited Plan w/ Basic World This means I can call any landline
phone in XYZ and pay nothing at all....

How is this even possibe?

The reason this question came up is that I gave my friend in XYZ
a call using my Vonage phone... we spoke for almost 4 hours
straight and Vonage's price? $0... obviously... but I could not
explain to my friend in XYZ how this works.... If we were both
in XYZ together, the call would have cost about $7.

thanks for any info! Smile

Hard to say, but many companies charge only for outgoing calls, not for incoming. That includes Vonage unless you're on the unlimited plan, which is zero for outgoing and incoming.

I've had Vonage for about two weeks. Based on what the online
acct status tells me, I've used 260 international minutes. (all free,
included in Basic World plan)

Had those 260 minutes been dialed from within the coutry that
I called, it would have cost nearly $47!

Still can't figure out how Vonage can afford to do this.... but
hey, I'm not complaining or anything... Very Happy

In a basic sense, here is why Vonage can offer it so inexpensively.

Vonage routes all of its telephone calls via the Internet, to a center that is closest to where your friend is. Vonage doesn't own all of these centers, but they negotiate with other companies that do own these centers in order to obtain the lowest cost of service. The actual telephone portion of the call is then between the location of this call center and your friend's landline phone. This is usually quite inexpensive to begin with, and with a larger company placing many calls, they can often receive favorable pricing (or a volume discount), at a rate much cheaper than normally available to the average consumer.

By using the Internet, Vonage can avoid having to pay various taxes, tarrifs and other fees that phone companies charge each other to transfer telephone calls from one company's network to another company's network.

Another note. Many people in the world basically are still getting screwed to make phone calls. Remember the price of your phone service just twenty years ago? Before the explosion of the internet and cell phones forced the phone giants to quit screwing people to talk to somebody. Unfortunately, that's still the case in many parts of the world.

Take where I live for an example. In Mexico the price for a landline phone from the giant monopoly of Telmex is outrageous. The standard package is 200 outgoing calls per month for around 32 dollars. However, that is only local calls. If I want to call anywhere in Mexico outside the city where I live, there is also a long distance charge of around 10cents per minute.

So, with the exception of the city where I live, I can call anywhere in Mexico with my Vonage phone cheaper than I can call using a landline in the same country. Ridiculous but true.
