Post subject: No caller ID name from everyone who calls me...
I'm still new to
Vonage
, so I don't know if this is normal or not.
Whenever people call me on my
Vonage
number, I can only
see their phone numbers and city name. This applies to
99% of the calls that I receive.
It gets even worse when the caller is from out-of-state,
in which case I see nothing at all. (no number, no name,
no nothing)
I had them call me at my landline Verizon number and their
name and number come through perfectly.
Also... when I call people, they only see "out of area" and
no number... this applies to 100% of the people that I
have called. Very frustrating....
Is there a problem with
Vonage
, or is there some setting that
I need to chage?
THANKS!

I would contact
Vonage
support. Almost every call I receive has a name and the number, except for cell phones, which usually says Cell Phone then the State 2 letter abbreviation then the number.
Some exceptions have the City State and the number, not sure why no name on these.

I agree with ed56, my incoming calls are the same. Also, your outgoing ID should show at least your number. Mine shows my city and state as well. I don't think its normal for nothing to show up when you call other people. As far as I know, your outgoing name won't show up with
Vonage
. I think there are some exceptions because I have read posts where people say their name shows up on the outgoing. I suspect, though, that it happens for people that port an existing number into
Vonage
.

I am willing to bet that your LEC (local exchange carrier) or the CLEC (the competitive local exchange carrier) is dropping the ball. A call goes to you via LEC, who transfers it to the CLEC (Vonage's local partner) who then moves it over the internet to
Vonage
and then to you. If the LEC does not transmit the caller ID data or the CLEC does not grab it and pass it on, you will not get it from Voange. True, it could be on Vonages end, but I doubt it as all they are doing is moving it along.
At least this is the way I understand it.

but this doesn't explain why the verizon landline has no trouble transmitting the called id data unless verizon and
Vonage
use completely different paths.

thanks! that's exactly what I was about to say...
when I use my Verizon landline,
every
person that I call can see
my full name and phone number....
Even my business partner
in Singapre saw my name and number on her Singapore landline
phone... (not sure how Verizon managed to transmit the data
halfway around the world...)

I was referring to caller id on incoming calls. If you have a
Vonage
assigned number, it to does not display your name. Ported numbers already have your name registered with them, so the name is displayed.

ed56, if you read kirsten's original post, you will see that no one receiving her calls see a phone number associated with the call. In her incoming calls, getting at least the number is better. although for whatever reason, she's nto getting any names.
I occasionally get these kinds of calls but most of the time, I get a name as well.
Your last post still does not answer my comment that verizon seems to have no issues showing caller's number and name for incoming and also show her name and number on outgoing. All this while
Vonage
seems to only be able to transmit number and location (no name) on incoming and nothing on outgoing. Granted, you are correct in that ported numbers seems to have both name and number. Mine always shows up with name and number since it was ported.
This makes me very skeptical that it's the CLEC or the LEC. I think
Vonage
somehow misprogrammed her number. That's my guess for now.

Her original post said:

That is what I was referring to, the LEC or CLEC. She did say (kind of as an afterthought):

Honestly did not pick up on the "out of area", but my main focus was on the incoming, which seemed to be the main point of the post, at least to me.
On outgoing, misprogramming (registering) her number may be correct, but that probably would not have anything to do with incoming. The same data from incoming numbers (as available) is sent to her as me and you. What is sent out originates at
Vonage
, but what comes in is simply passed along by
Vonage
.

okay... now I'm really at a loss for words...
I went to the
Vonage
website today and completed my
number transfer authorization form. (from Verizon to
Vonage
)
Only
minutes
after
Vonage
emaied me to confirm
the tranfer, all of my Vonage-dialed outbound caller ID
shows the full name and number of my
Verizon landline
phone
!
When I called my Verizon landline phone number, only
the Verizon line rang. (since the actual transfer has
not yet taken place)
Even my V-Portal adapter now shows my Verizon
landline number as Line 1's number...
How was this even possible? I can only image that
someone, besides
Vonage
and Verizon, actually
controls how caller ID data is sent and receive, no?
